Product Description

Review

This is a very strong book, useful to any spinner ... the best spinning book I have seen Yarns and Fabrics (http://yarnsandfabrics.co.uk/crafts/) Although intended mainly for beinner and improver, there is much to interest the more experienced spinner, with 'expert advice' on many pages; I have been spinning for 25 years and found it most stimulating. The quality of the illustration together with the clear instruction throught the book is quite outstanding. It is a valuable resource for all spinners. Journal of Weavers, Spinners & Dyers

I like the mat and gloss cover - very smart. In Foundations you'll find a brief history, tools, natural and synthetic fibres with a few obvious omissions here. In chapter 2 the techniques for preparing fibres are thoroughly explained with written instructions and photographs so you can see exactly what to do. Fibre reactive, acid and rainbow dyeing are also covered in this chapter. Spindle, wheel, worsted, woollen and spinning from the fold are all explained in detail, again with great close-up photos. There are instructions for getting texture into your spun yarn and four different plies. See how to make a skein. block, finish and wind balls. Chapter 3 includes recipes for yarns. The recipes are clear and easy to follow, you see the fibres, yarn, skein and a knitted swatch, which I found really useful. There are lots of examples even including paper yarn. Chapter 4 has projects with a woven cushion cover, knitted hat and mittens, tassels, knitted slipcase. The final chapter is called Professional Approaches and talks about going commercial and selling your yarns, showcasing some artists who do. This is a very strong book, useful to any spinner. For me the projects let it down slightly, I would have liked more and better projects but I still think this is the best spinning book I have seen. This and anothe book titled "The Complete Guide to Spinning Yarn: Techniques, Projects, and Recipes " are one and the same [just different cover pages!]. It is mis-leading and is not right.
Book doesnt live up to the impressive title it boasts of....

This book really got me into the world of spinning yarn. I purchased this book after a friend said she had been mentioned near the back of the book. I read it cover to cover and within a week I was spinning using a drop spindle. It was a great introduction, very clear and I loved the pictures. I will continue to refer to this book in my journey, as I hope to progress with my new found hobby. I love spinning with the drop spindle and am waiting to receive a spinning wheel in the post! I now love spinning so much I prefer it to knitting and have found it really relaxing. My son (who has ME) is also hoping to learn the spinning wheel after we realised treddling is a similar feet action that his physio asked him to practise daily. I didnt realise how much this book would have brought benefit to our lives. I highly reccomend it (combined with U tube clips) to anyone with an interest of crafts and fibres to get you started with spinning yarn. Many Thanks goes to the author from our family xxx
