Book Description

19 Jan 2011
Spinning Wool teaches spinners to analyse fleeces and to get the best from their wheels. The book is written from the spinner's point of view, and provides information about wool that would only previously have been found in farming manuals. The book is sensitive to the rising surge in popularity of weaving, and explores a wide range of what can be produced from spinning, as well as what is happening in the spinning process and what kinds of raw materials can be incorporated into yarns. This book covers all the basics as well as building up to more advanced spinning techniques. Alongside the step-by-step yarn designs and the section on knitting and weaving projects, this book is perfect for anyone wanting to delve into the world of spinning.

Review

Thoroughly researched and written from experience - concise, clear and informative. This is just what I'd expect and would want to offer for the benefit of a new spinner moving on 'beyond the basics' … There is a great deal in this one book - I thought it rather expensive until I realised how much is included, and how well written it is. --Yarn Maker

Well presented throughout with clear colour photos … the book will make a great addition to any spinner's library --Journal for Weavers, Spinners and Dyers

5.0 out of 5 stars Spinning to the Crimp 24 Jan 2012
Format:Paperback
This is a great book, well presented information and good photographs. The information is centred around worsted spinning, though woollen spinning is covered.

The thing that stands out about this book is the information about spinning to the crimp, which is a really useful skill for more experienced spinners and well worth studying. This is the only spinning book I've ever found it covered in.

4.0 out of 5 stars Want to improve your spinning? 3 Nov 2011
Format:Paperback
This is a thorough and detailed guide from an excellent spinner and teacher. Ann Field is a New Zealander and information on wool focuses on the local breeds such as Merino, Teeswater, Cormo and some of these may not be easily available as raw fleeces in the UK. The author gives excellent information on buying, sorting and cleaning fleeces from scratch. The technical details on wool such as crimp, staple length and fineness are very informative and bring together facts that help spinners get the very best out of each type sheep breed.
If you are a good spinner but do not want to branch out into art yarns, then this is essential reading for understanding the structure of wool staples and relating that to your finished traditional yarn. There is a great chapter on spinning wheels and how they work. Some of the projects seem dated but who cares when the rest of the book is outstanding! Overall, well worth getting as a reference tool for the purist spiiner who wants technical excellence.
