3.0 out of 5 stars World famous potter who sought harmony in his creative work, 24 May 2002
By Thelma Batchelor (Surrey, U.K.) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This book is a short account of the life of Bernard Leach, the world famous potter. It was written to commemorate the 20th anniversary of his death in 1979. The books tells of Leach's life as a creative artist from his early encounters with fellow potters in Japan to his creation of the famous Leach Pottery in St. Ives, Cornwall, home of many flourishing artists of the 20th century.

His deep commitment to the spiritual and social teachings of Bahá'u'lláh, the founder of the Bahá'í Faith, was central to his life and to his art. He was an artist and craftsman par excellence. He longed for harmony between the material and the spiritual, and between East and West. He found it in the teachings of the Bahá'í Faith.

The book tells a little of the history of the Bahá'í Faith which Bernard Leach first encountered in Japan and later in discussion with fellow artist Mark Tobey at Dartington Hall around 1930. Over the years he gradually came to understand the profundity of its teachings. Another of his special friends was the South African artist Reginald Turvey, also a Bahá'í.

Leach wrote poetry, essays and verse which is included in this small book. He wrote of Japan, of his art, about life and consciousness and education. In 1953 he wrote an essay about what his religious faith meant to him. He wrote of his belief and his hope for the unity and maturity of mankind. He lived to a grand old age and was a creative artist all his life.

Included also are several interesting black and white photos of the artist, and his works.
