Proof you can do it if you want to.., 22 Dec 2011
This review is from: Spinning Beneath My Feet: An Irishman Treks to the North Pole (Hardcover)
A remarkably understated account of a real achievement. The author's commitment to a boyhood dream is realised by passion and self-belief - all backed-up by good, honest hard-work. In becoming the first Irishman to walk to the North Pole, his story demonstrates how the likes of you and I can realise our ambitions, if we believe in ourselves. There is a nice account of meeting the British 'national treasure' and explorer that is Brian Blessed and an amusing account of frozen 'family jewels' (although it probably wasn't funny at the time!). The book is nicely illustrated with photos from the expedition. It would be an ideal read for any youngster thinking of future expeditions (particularly arctic), anyone who is into dog sledging, and anyone interested in who's who in contemporary Irish culture. I'd like to have seen a little more detail about the flaws perceived in the rest of the team, we only get a tantalising taster. However, after completing a protracted expedition myself (in warmer climes I hasten to add), I suspect that the author understandably put the goal of completing the mission ahead of compounding personal schisms.
If you want to get a real feel of the cold, the physical challenge, peoples' ability to overcome and an insight into how non-famous (refreshingly not a 'celebrity from the tele type) ordinary Joe can do remarkable things then this is a recommended read. You never know, it may just prompt you to go and do your own stuff!
