Product Description

Review

McCarten's first novel is a beautifully contructed comedy which wryly observes a small town's follies with a subtle-but-hip sensibility. A Kiwi-flavoured Garrison Keillor.' -- Esquire

`An impressive novel full of alien abductions and small town neuroses...Weird, witty and wonderful.' -- The Mirror

`Combines the cultural savvy of an episode of the Simpsons with the formally meticulous confusion/resolution of a Shakespeare comedy. inventive, engaging and sharply written, it is a thoughtful and often hilarious meditation on the way we spin stories...' -- x

`McCarten's dramatic gifts with characterization, plot, dialogue and humour shine through this sparkling novel. Domestic violence, the frustrations of small-town life,
the blessings of beauty and the pain of ugliness, the boredom of factory work - all of these are woven into a story which is a quirky good read and an entertaining expression of the zeitgeist.' -- The Observer

From the Publisher

A startling and clever outstanding novel
A startling a clever outstanding novel. A vivid and bewitching story of a slice of New Zealand, combined with wit, humour, poignancy and an unnerving understanding of the minds of young women. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.
