BBC Review

Ladies and gentlemen, roll up, because the Brody Dalle show is back in town. Among the many dazzling attractions, a diva, a vamp, a harpy and a sideshow freak: one accomplished performer, a menagerie of personalities.

It has been three years since Dalle parted company with The Distillers and despite deciding immediately that the show would go on, its only now that Spinnerette (having married and given birth to a child) is ready to reintroduce herself to her public.

Along for the ride are fellow Distiller Tony Bevilacqua, serial collaborator Alain Johannes, and one-time Chili Pepper Jack Irons, although Spinnerette seems to have been conceived as a means of evolving Dalle's prolific songwriting skills. Readily admitting that the material is a cathartic exorcism of certain personal issues, the record is the ultimate, all-encapsulating mood swing of its matriarch.

Where The Distillers were bombardiers, Spinnerette like coaxing. Opening with EP track Ghetto Love, Dalle drawls her way in and makes herself at home.

There are undeniable moments of the expected dark intensity: Distorting A Code touches cacophony and brandishes unintelligible babbling, while Cupid is a venomous stab at old adversary love. But cheeky and geeky upstage mother menace here, the album is a successful foray into a broader range of rock.

Geeking is mathrock with a nod towards Weezer, touchingly based on Dalle's lullaby to daughter Camille. Sex Bomb is a girly, teasing yelp-along for knowing young ladies, with its repetitive refrain ''please me daddy''. And Impaler is a Slavic style thumper with ingenuous accents courtesy of a half-empty wine bottle and Johannes.

The cover rings of the sexual veracity of Peaches, and vocally there are shades of Shirley Manson before Garbage lost their edge, but one senses that when Dalle left The Distillers behind, she was bidding farewell to more than a name. --Keira Burgess

I'll get this straight from the outset: I love the first two Distillers records (Coral Fang was weak in my view) and I am punk through and through. And this album is not punk. But that doesn't make it bad, and certainly doesn't make it any sort of "sell out" or "betrayal", both things I have read people say foolishly about Spinnerette's debut.

Everyone needs to evolve as a person through their life; it's what keeps us interesting and challenging. What Brody Dalle has done here is a magnificent, confident evolution from furious punk siren into a fully rounded musician.

The songs are very highly produced, and have a feel of some of the early 90's post-industrial scene at times, with - yes, I know - a sprinkling of QoTSA and at times a hint of Garbage (not a compliment, but as a whole it works fine). What has bowled me over though is the sheer intensity and darkness of the album, even though it has plenty of humour and a much more "pop" feel than anything Brody has done before.

It has a deep, confrontational sexuality running through it, and an offbeat, minor-key melody which, interwoven with the powerful, multi-layered production just creates something monumental.

Stand out tracks are Ghetto Love, Geeking and Baptized by Fire but, to be honest, there isn't a bad track on here.

Don't expect the Distillers nitro-fuelled hard core, it isn't here, but come with an open mind and this could well blow you away. Play it loud - it's the best album I have heard this year.

This album is unfortunately not as good as i'd hoped and I can't say that i'm quite as impressed as some of my fellow reviewers about Brody Dalle's new enterprise. It's not bad it's just not especially memorable.
She's made a similar change in style from her Distillers personna as Courtney Love did when she re-invented herself after she left Hole but in my opinion Courtney is a better song writer.
You have to wait until track 4 "geeking" before you get a really good catchy hook and with it's great guitar riff this is an excellent song but there arn't many others of this quality.
"Baptized by fire" is too poppy for my liking and inconsistent with it's much rockier neighbours. "Distorting a code" has the most peculiar off-key singing of the word "find" (although obviously done on purpose) and is very annoying and "sex bomb" is a rather chaotic sounding song with a dubious male backing vocal. "Rebellious palpitations" has a psychedelic edge running through it and "impaler" is a quirky folk/country outing.
The album ends with a fairly plodding song "a prescription for mankind".
I'd hoped for something a bit more spectacular from Brody but i appear to be in the minority so maybe it will grow on me over time?

Great 14 Feb 2011

Well recorded/produced album, great drums, bass, guitar and vocals. Atmospheric at times like on the track Distorting a code and Implaer. Obviously Ghetto Love being the main kick ass track. The album improves the more you listen to it. Hopefully they'll do a follow album soon??!!
