Really enjoyed this with our son Samuel.
The photographs really capture kiddie imaginations.
Different to the other Jane Brocket books that we have read. This is one for the little ones.
Great fun.
We'll be buying this as a "baby welcome" present for all our friends.

4.0 out of 5 stars Textures everywhere! 28 Mar 2011
By VioLetskieZ - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Library Binding
This book discusses the plethora of textures all around us in a fun and colorful way. This is a picture book like no other because once we are shown the pictures, the words following describe what that specific texture feels like. The photography is amazing! The pictures really pop and will capture the attention of its readers. After every picture, we're given a description of how the item feels. I really loved that the author did that because not all children are exposed to the things in the book. Some children grow up never knowing what snow feels like, so I appreciated how descriptive the author is. At the end of the book the author challenges it's readers to discover the textures of things around them and to creatively come up with words to describe them. I really like how it encourages children to be creative.
5.0 out of 5 stars A very clever concept: exploring textures through photography and words 12 Dec 2011
By Laurie Thompson - Published on Amazon.com

I must admit, when my own daughter entered kindergarten and started the unit on texture, I was surprised. Yes, textures are all around us, but what's to study? These kids are already experts. After all, they've been feeling textures since before they were born (often with their mouths)!

I soon realized that's exactly the point, though. They are all around us, but do we have the words to describe them? Have we really ever thought about how things feel, or why? This isn't important only for its scientific implications, it's also critical for good writing! I enjoyed seeing my children go through this topic and gain a new appreciation for the things around them. And I especially loved trying to help them come up with exactly the right words to describe a common, or not so common, texture.

In SPIKY, SLIMY, SMOOTH, Jane Brocket combines beautiful, bold photos of everyday objects with deliciously descriptive language.

While the reading level seems a bit too advanced for most kids who will likely be studying textures as part of their science curriculum, it will make a great read-aloud for their teachers looking for an engaging way to present the topic. Brocket's text includes many interactive elements, and her kid-friendly photos will have young learners wiggling their toes, delving into their memory banks, and stretching their imaginations to experience the textures themselves.

4.0 out of 5 stars More than a picture book 1 April 2011
By Mary Beth Magee - Published on Amazon.com

A pair of fuzzy duck slippers and a cable-knit yarn project grace the back cover of Jane Brocket's book, "Spiky, Slimy, Smooth: What is Texture?" while cacti, raw eggs and green tiles cover the front. The interior pages are filled with similar photographs.

Brocket has put together an elegant collection of pictures illustrating various textures in the world, both natural and manufactured. But the reader cannot dismiss this volume as simply an art book. The volume aims for a juvenile audience.

Whimsical verses accompany the photos, describing something of the textures displayed within them. For example, the duck slippers reappear on page four with the message that "Furry slippers are soft and fluffy. They tickle your toes and keep your feet warm."

Some of the verbiage in the book will be above the reading skills of younger children, although the clever descriptions and interactive format make this a great read-aloud choice. Children will enjoy the delicious assortment of words Brocket uses to invite an exploration of texture.

While adults can enjoy the quality of the photos, children will adore the bold colors and often humorous subjects. Bare feet in a mud pile illustrate the "oooooozy" quality of mud. A gummy trio of candy snakes, artfully braided, depict "stretchy and rubbery."

As the author of several craft books, Brocket knows a great deal about texture. I was impressed by the variety of textures offered in the book, while at the same time I wondered about the length. At about thirty pages, the book may seem too long for some young children. Fear not, the photos dominate the pages and I suspect the children will delight in the pictures of many tasty treats and funny shapes. Elementary school teachers will find this book a valuable addition to their bookshelves.
