Product Description

Product Description

Spike Milligan was one of the most gifted, creative individuals of our time, and is remembered as a true comic genius. However, many people are unaware that he battled throughout his adult life against anxiety and depression, neither of which he was able to conquer. He allowed his biographer and close friend, Pauline Scudamore, complete and unfettered access to all his files and correspondence, as well as to his home and family. She also interviewed scores of his friends and colleagues to be able to present a full and well-rounded picture of a greatly misunderstood but hugely popular man. His anarchic writing and performing established him as one of the great anti-authoritarian figures of British comedy, but he paid a high price for the pleasure he gave to others.

About the Author

Pauline Scudamore was a close friend of Spike Milligan and his family for many years, and this book was written with his complete co-operation. He allowed her to have access to all of his books, papers and letters and ask any questions of him she might wish. Pauline also wrote Dear Robert, Dear Spike which is based on the correspondence between Spike Milligan and Robert Graves.

when i bought this book i did not realise that it was written in 1985 and that after his death the author had added a few more pages. If i had known this i would not have purchased this book.It is incomplete in many ways. The author relied on many sessions with Milligan for the book.So clearly she was out to please him.as is apparent in her remarks to him after she presented him with a copy of the original book. What we get is a lot about his illness his books and poetry and Robert Graves and virtually nothing about his film roles, for which there is not appendix, his serial adultery till the very end,his tv work again till the very end.In short i learnt more or less what Milligan cared to divulge and very little else.I grew to dislike Milligan more and more as the book went on.I was very pleased to get to the end of this book which i would not recommend to anybody.there must be better books about Milligan than this.
