Synopsis

Saturday Night Live alumni Dan Aykroyd and Chevy Chase appear on film together for the first time as Austin Milbarge and Emmett Fitz-Hume, respectively, in this hilarious spy/adventure spoof. Austin and Emmett are two dopey businessmen who decide they want to be spies, even though they have no experience in that area. The dumb duo take the CIA's admissions test... and are busted for cheating. Nevertheless, the pair are employed as spies anyway unaware that the true reason they've been hired is to serve as a smokescreen for a band of real spies who are on an important mission. Soon the Russians are after the nitwits, and a potential world war hangs in the balance.

5.0 out of 5 stars The first step in the operation is to shave the patient, 30 Aug 2008

Emmett Fitz-Hume (Dan Aykroyd) and (Chevy Chase) Austin Millbarge are looking for a new life and find it in the CIA. They are so good they are rushed through training. They are dropped off in the desert to perform a mission. Natural adapters they find their skills get them into and out of all situations Hope/Crosby style. Little do they know they are decoys? Speaking of Bob Hope, be sure to notice the key part he plays in this movie.

Will they complete their mission?
Or will they figure out who the decoys are?
Where is the real team?
Is there something more sinister afoot?
Can you sing "Soul Finger"?

4.0 out of 5 stars ., 5 Sep 2006
By zissou (England) - See all my reviews
With eighties comedies they either inspire hatred or a perverse kind of enjoyment. There are so many criticisms that can be levelled at spies like us, however its inanity is its genius. Dan Ackroyd and chevy chase playing the same characters they played in the vast majority of films they appeared in form a slapstick likeable duo who are sent out as decoys to protect the genuine U.S agents who are deep in cold war Soviet Union. There are many hilarious moments in the film, such as when they attempt to cheat their way through an exam and also when they first arrive at the training camp. If you enjoy eighties comedies such as caddyshack, dragnet, or even airplane this is an essential purchase

4.0 out of 5 stars A Secret Mission to your Funny Bone, 17 Nov 2007
Written in 1981 by the ever funny Dave Thomas with John Belushi and Dan Ackroyd in mind Spies Like Us was put on the backburner after Belushi's sudden death. In 84 Dan Aykroyd dusted off Thomas's script and re-worked it a little with Chevy Chase in mind. Spies Like Us generated allot of enthusiasm before it's release, it was billed as an action comedy allot like Ghostbusters. But it failed to deliver upon it's release. The thing with Spies like us is that it's to clever a comedy. Allot of the jokes go over your head because there aimed at the military and government, if you don't understand the technical aspects the jokes seem flat. Ghostbusters used allot of technical words but they were fictitious and added to the humor of the movie. With Spies the use of real words for data and information made it flat and didn't give it a goofy side.
Both Chevy and Dan are really in character and perform to the best of there ability. The movie is full of cameo's, so if your a film buff you'd probably enjoy seeing famous directors and actors pop in and out. The first half of the movie is genuinely hilarious, but half was through the story gets to complicated and the jokes don't come as sharply as they had the first half. But all said Spies like us is a classic in my opinion and a movie you'd enjoy again and again. 4/5

Just trust me. This film has funny scenes but doesn't work as a film. You come away slightly confused that you actually watched John Landis movie. Read more

I had this years ago and I've now bought this on DVD.

This won't be the funniest film you've ever seen, but I've always liked Chevy Chase, he plays the lead comic... Read more
