About the Author

Mary Botham Howitt was born in 1799 in Coleford, England. Originally published in 1829, Mary's best-known work 'The Spider and the Fly' has been enjoyed by generations of readers and has become an age old classical cautionary tale. Mary Howitt died in Rome in 1888. Tony DiTerlizzi's unique and unusal artstyle is the perfect complement to Howitt's classic tale. He lives with his wife in Brooklyn, New York. Holly Black spent her early years in a decaying Victorian mansion where her mother fed her a steady diet of ghost stories and faerie tales. I was really pleased with this set. The trunk is sturdy cardboard and has a hidden magnetic snap shut closure all along the front edge - slightly magical in the way it clunks shut. It is decorated on every side on the outside and on the inner lid.

The 5 story books are hardback about 100 pages long and as a nice touch the paper edges are uneven and different sizes to give them an old spooky book feel. It does make it a little difficult to turn the pages which may put off younger readers. The postcards are sealed together in sellophane and the 215+ page notebook is paperback.

It is slightly smaller than I imagined but a lovely looking set and would make an ideal gift (athough get Amazon to deliver to a gift address as it's very heavy).

The stories themselves are wonderfully magical and should appeal to any Harry Potter fan. They are wonderfully illustrated with black and white drawings but also a colour plate on each first page giving them an old book feel. The books are short but make wonderful stories to read aloud for children and easier books to finish for junior readers age 7+.

The books in the set are American versions - the prices are in dollars and the books themselves are full of American language like 'Mom' etc which is to be expected as the book is about 3 American children who move into a spooky house and get into dangerous adventures with all manner of mystical and magical creatures.

Highly Recommended.

My 9 year old son has nearly finished the second book and is thoroughly enjoying reading them. The trunk keeps the collection together. I read the reviews that had been posted about this collection and was concerned about the uneven page edges that were mentioned. The pages are uneven on my sons set, not sure wether this is intentional or a fault but it does not detract from the pleasure of the story. I would have preferred nice neat edges but not that concerned as to return the set.

A Kid's Review
This a set of 5 books. They are fun, adventurous and really exciting.I have enjoyed reading them with my Mummy and Daddy. The stories are about 3 children called Simon, Jared and Mallory and their adventures with creatures like goblins and boggarts. They go on a quest to find their great uncle.
