Product Description

Product Description

It begins with a severed finger and with a gift in Winter. Not realising that she is being courted by a faery suitor, The Bride enters the cold and sparkling world of the Prince of Spiders. She takes the severed finger, unaware that such gifts carry consequences, and finds herself trapped. The Prince of Spiders rules this land of dreams, lost in glittering snow. As a Winter King, he should end his reign by dying at the coming of Spring. Until now he has delayed this by offering the blood of artists and poets to the ancient spirits of the land, eeking out his season long beyond its time. But now he has a more daring plan in his heart... a plan that is thwarted by the disappearance of his human bride.

5.0 out of 5 stars A fascinating and magnificent read, 5 Aug 2009
By A. Field - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I'm not usually a big fan of books about fairies as they tend to be saccharine. This book is anything but. After what felt to me a slightly abrupt start the book quickly grabbed my interest and I couldn't put it down, I read it in one go. The characters are varied and interesting without being caricatured. The plot is complex without being confusing. The writing style is fancy and opulent without being pretentious. I recommend it highly.

5.0 out of 5 stars A blissfully dark, gorgeous and richly woven tale..., 16 Feb 2009
By Ms. L. Cdaligan "LauraRedWitch" (London, UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I openly cried on public transport after finishing this book! Only a few books hold this power over me, and Debbie's unexpected faerie tale had me unashamedly blubbering in clear view of commuters. Why was I crying? Well I'm not telling you, that will spoil the surprise! But I will tell you that I was simultaneously crying with sadness and delight that such a rich and darkly woven tale had to end! Lovers of 'fluffy' depictions of faerie land beware, these are the faeries of old; war, gore, trickery and all. But through the blood and insanity there is a tale of love and sorrow so real that I believe in every single character!
I love this book and I love the dark humour of Debbie's writing.
Read it... you'll never look at a spider in the same way again...

5.0 out of 5 stars Doing fay right, 25 Mar 2008
By Gary O'Connell "goconnell99" (Surrey, UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I confess to being immensely fussy when it comes to depictions of faeries. Ms Gallagher's debut does them justice and gets them right from beginning to end. This is a rich, dark and whimsical debut novel that uses language skillfully to conjure a poetic and scary world. The fabulous, capricious creatures that populate it endanger any mortals that are drawn into their web. No Tinkerbells here but plenty of menacing monstrosities to imperil the unfortunate Spider's Bride. Magical stuff.

This isn't your typical fantasy novel.

You won't find questing heroes, dragons or knights in armour (much). Read more

At first I was disturbed by The Spiders Bride. It's not what I expect from a fantasy. Perhaps I've got too used to children on broomsticks and hairy footed halflings. Read more
