Product Description

Gory horror from director Daniel Simpson in which four students choose the wrong place to squat. Searching for an empty building in London where they can live rent free, art students Molly (Emma Griffiths Malin), Zoe (Amy Noble), Toby (George Maguire) and Luke (Reuben-Henry Biggs) break into a seemingly abandoned run-down property. They soon, however, discover the error of their ways, as one by one they start to disappear in a frenzy of blood-letting, and the realisation dawns that they are trapped in the house with a psychotic madman.

3.0 out of 5 stars Squatters Frights 28 Mar 2011
By Mr. Jonathon T. Beckett TOP 1000 REVIEWER
Format:DVD|Amazon Verified Purchase
!!!WARNING.CONTAINS SPOILERS!!!

Four skint, homeless art students decide on a plan of action. They go looking one night for a suitable place to squat, and a rent free life means more time for artistic freedom and expression. After perusing some unsuitable properties they come across their dream house, a large, relatively remote house that they easily gain access too. However their dream property turns into a hell house when after a night of drunken excess, they awake to find the house has been sealed up. From the inside. It seems their mysterious new landlord doesn't want them to leave. In one piece anyway.
When purchasing this dvd, I had read comparisons between the film and American films such as Hostel and the Saw franchise. After watching it, as much as I would like to say that the comparisons were fatuous, I have to admit that they are unavoidable. Yes, Spiderhole does contain scenes of pretty unpleasant torture and it does have a group of friends trapped in a puzzle box of sorts and menaced by an unknown enemy. However, Spiderhole does contain enough originality and some interesting ideas to ensure that it succeeds in its own right rather than something to be purchased by fans of other films.
For a start, I quite liked the character of Molly, probably due to Emma Griffiths Malin delivering a pretty good performance. At least Molly shows some invention and spirit in the face of the horrible situation she finds herself in, rather than just shrieking every time she is menaced. I did find the other characters of the students quite annoying though, and very difficult to identify with. I also found that the director used the sets to good effect, creating quite a menacing atmosphere on occasion. Finally, I must just mention the ending.

3.0 out of 5 stars A Decent Effort 27 Mar 2011
Format:DVD
I must admit the title drew me in. I thought this was going to be a creature feature about a big, nasty spider preying on unsuspecting teenagers. Instead, I got to see something different but no less entertaining. Some scenes in the movie reminded me of Hostel, only not as intense. There's a back story that should have been more fully developed, but I guess he needs to save that material for the sequel, depending on how well Spiderhole does in DVD sales.

The acting was okay for the most part and the house looked creepy enough but the ending left me wanting. I know this is Simpson's debut as a director so I won't tear him apart this time. Seriously, he did an okay job. It's worth a look.

3.0 out of 5 stars enjoyable 20 Mar 2013
By GramP
Format:DVD
I enjoyed this film. The house was delightfully creepy with some effective camerawork to make it feel ominous and mysterious. Its some time before we know what is really going on, and this tension was the most enjoyable part of the film for me. Once the protagonist was revealed we lost that sense of mystery and intrigue, with some rather derivative horror torture devices thrown in. Despite that, it was still quite entertaining and would say its definitely worth a watch.

2.0 out of 5 stars Clichéd, predictable, and exceedingly bland 19 Feb 2012
By Daniel Jolley HALL OF FAME TOP 500 REVIEWER
Format:DVD
Alas, critics have already laid claim to some of the best lines describing this film, such as "hole-y crap" and the very true statement that all you'll find at this bottom of this hole is "a truly beaten dead horse." Most of the pieces of a decent horror film are actually present here, but writer/director Daniel Simpson proves to be something far less than a master craftsman. I'm surprised some of the actors didn't trip over some of the many clichés that litter this cinematic landscape. What little suspense is built up early on is thoroughly wasted the moment we find out what is truly going on (hint: it's exceedingly unoriginal). And you can forget all about holding out hope for gore to emerge as this film's saving grace, as the director wimps out big-time in that department. Spiderhole is basically a paint-by-numbers horror film, which makes for a bland viewing experience devoid of scary or squeamish moments. Sad, really.

So you have these four art students who go out and find a big, abandoned house to squat in and call their own - not the most sympathetic of characters right from the start. If they're homeless, it seems to be by choice; they really just want to screw and around and party on their own without paying rent. Anyway, they break into this large and seemingly long-abandoned house and make it their own - without even having a look at most of the rooms. The two girls are a little upset when they find a cache of really bloody clothes stashed in a cabinet, but the gang soon decides to sleep on the decision of whether or not to leave. When they awaken the next morning, though, they find that the decision has already been made for them. Finding themselves locked in, they run around for a few panicked minutes, then basically just give up hope.
