I read a library copy of the paperback.
The actual Spider Island event - throughout the Spider-themed titles -was not particularly bad as crossovers go.
Everyone in Manhattan gains spider-powers due to a virus and as that plays out our Spider-Heroes face the Spider-Queen and the Jackal.
What that crossover didn’t really need was a ‘companion’ and as one this falls quite flat as nothing here really adds or compliments the main action at all.
The tales contained in this trade share the backdrop but that’s all and most of them don’t really need that connection to tell their own stories.
There is overt comedy as with the Herc issues and the Avengers one-shot but it is slapstick and way too self-aware for my tastes.
There are contenders for their own titles with the Spider Woman, Spider-Girl, Shang-Chi and Cloak & Dagger entries but they are either interchangeable with any other modern hero (Spider-Woman / Spider-Girl) or too limited by their own two-dimensional characterisations (Shang-Chi / C & D) to spark much interest.
The Black Panther and the Heroes for Hire chapters fit into their own mini-runs of the time quite well but neither saved their concepts.
These type of collections work best as ‘tasters’ for what is available out there – in this case though, the taste is stale and uninspired.
The main event is worth a look, Try that.

Spider Island...the other stuff that happened! 7 Aug. 2012

Spider Island was a huge event for Spiderman and supporting family. It also rebuilt the Spiderfamily. This trade collects a number of miniseries that were connected as well as a few issues of solo heroes' comics like Hercules and Black Panther. Spider-Girl, Shang Chi and Cloak and Dagger all get minis, while others show up in shorts. All together it's a great companion to the story, and Spider Girl and SHang Chi's stories alone are worth it. They both set themselves up to have stornger ties to both Spiderman and the heroic community. If you have or read Spider Island you really should get this!

Not Worth Reading If You Only Care About Spidey 27 Dec. 2012
By capreece - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback
This TPB is not worth buying, in my opinion. I bought the companion looking for a lot of good complementary stories to the Spider Island arc of stories, which it did minimally. There are many issues, mainly of Cloak and Dagger that are chalked full of dull and dry personal stories with no talk of what is going on with the spiders. The Master of Kung-Fu issues and Spider-Girl issues are the best, which are just ok and the rest is dribble. You gain nothing additional that is important to the Spider Island story line.
