Fast paced and gripping throughout,

This review is from: Spider (Paperback)
Linda Strachan is best known for her beautiful children's books, so I was interested to find out what her first young adult book would be like - I wasn't disappointed. Spider was gripping from the first page - I read the whole book in one sitting and was left begging for more. The book follows a group of teenagers who go joyriding; an activity which inevitably ends in disaster. The pace of the book is relentless, but the skilful writing means that all the characters are fully formed, drawing you in to their dark world. As an adult, I felt as though this book was like a fantastic excerpt from a longer book, and would have preferred to find out more about the lives of these characters, but I appreciate that this is the perfect book for teenagers, particularly those who aren't used to reading longer books. I highly recommend Spider to anyone looking for a fast paced book, packed with emotion and hope that Linda Strachan will write a full length book for adults soon.

Spider is a short book with an important message: don't take life for granted, because you never know how quickly it can end. Most of the book takes place on the night of a car crash, a crash caused by delinquent Spider and his affinity for stealing cars.Spider and his friends Deanna and Andy are lucky to survive, and their near-death experience teaches each of them the value of love and friendship. It also proves that a life of crime isn't the right path to choose and, given the chance, can be avoided. I thought this was a fantastic way to show teenagers that things can always be changed, and that nothing is set in stone. Although the page count wasn't huge, I felt like I got to know the characters well enough, and sympathised with Spider's circumstance. It can't be easy to watch your life slowly spin out of control, and know that there's no-one readily available to help you get back on the right track. This situation and its solution is what Linda Strachan highlights, and she does so in a very positive way. Spider is a gritty, realistic look at life as a teenager, and all the ramifications that inevitably accompany a bad decision. If you're a fan of Kevin Brooks, Cathy MacPhail or Gillian Philip, give this one a go -- it's definitely worth a quick read.

'Spider' just doesn't stop! I kept on wanting to read it late at night it was so good.I found the opening pages so visual, I was struck by some of the scenes! The characters were real in my mind and I cared for what was going to happen to them. If you want to go on a ride from hell, then read 'Spider'!
