Product Description

Book Description

The 13th Temperance Brennan thriller from international bestselling author, and world-class forensic anthropologist Kathy Reichs.

Note to customers: This title was published in hardback as "Mortal Remains".

Product Description

Dr Temperance Brennan spends her life working amongst the decomposed, the mutilated and the skeletal. So the two-days-dead body she is called to examine holds little to surprise her. Until she discovers that the man is John Lowery, an ex-soldier who was apparently killed in Vietnam in 1968. So who is buried in Lowery's grave?

The case takes Tempe to the heart of the American military, where she must examine the remains of anyone who may have had a connection to the drowned man. It's a harrowing task, but it pays off when she finds Lowery's dog tags amongst the bones of a long-dead soldier.

As Tempe unravels the tangled threads of the soldiers' lives and deaths, she realises there are some who would rather the past stayed dead and buried. And when she proves difficult to frighten, they turn their attention to the one person she would give her life to protect...

Remains to be seen 18 Oct 2010
Format:Hardcover
For a start, don't be confused if Amazon recommends another new Kathy Reichs book, "Spider Bones": it and "Mortal Remains" are one and the same. "Mortal Remains" (or "Spider Bones") is a mixture of the new and the old: new in the sense that the subject is up-to-date forensic science, with lots of the acronyms that she and Jeffery Deaver so love, and a didactic intent which teaches the reader a lot more than science, including the Samoan language and Hawaiian geography, though the lectures are delivered in a chatty style which makes them easy to digest. Old, because it is familiar Kathy Reichs territory, and also because the story-telling is rather old-fashioned: the plot is very convoluted with lots of false trails, and so to keep the reader up to speed characters often re-cap events, ostensibly to inform each other but actually to remind the reader what is going on; chapters often end with a teasing hint of excitement to come so the reader will keep the pages turning.

This mixture is effective enough, but for me what sets Kathy Reichs apart at the moment is the sense of humour, always bobbing below the surface, which frequently breaks through: the chatty style with which she lectures the reader has already been referred to, but there is also an ironic knowingness about what she is doing - she acknowledges the acronyms ("alphabet soup")and even refers to her character's own television series as one of her detectives interviews a suspect: "You claim to be smart. Know all about DNA. I'm sure you watch 'CSI' and 'Law and Order'. Maybe 'Bones', but that might be over your head..." With such a sentence, it is difficult not to like the author. And as other thriller writers strive to rival 'War and Peace' with the weightiness of their tomes, she thankfully realises you can still get a decent story across in around 300 pages. And as a reviewer of "Spider Bones" said, it isn't 'War and Peace'; it's a bit of fun for the reader to enjoy then forget about, but rare in this season's crop of thrillers, the impression is that the writer actually enjoyed writing it.

Duplicate 2 Nov 2010
Format:Hardcover
The usual style and plot type, which is good if you like her past work (I do) but probably formulaic if you don't. Please be aware that this is "Spiderbones" renamed for the UK market so don't make the same mistake I did!

Worst ever
I quite enjoy her books, in part for the animal descriptions. This one was so incredibly dull I could not even finish it. Mostly lists of USArmy acronyms and procedures.
