Book Description

24 Aug 2010
Kathy Reichs—#1 New York Times bestselling author and producer of the FOX television hit Bones—returns with the thirteenth riveting novel featuring forensic anthropologist Dr. Temperance Brennan.

John Lowery was declared dead in 1968—the victim of a Huey crash in Vietnam, his body buried long ago in North Carolina. Four decades later, Temperance Brennan is called to the scene of a drowning in Hemmingford, Quebec. The victim appears to have died while in the midst of a bizarre sexual practice. The corpse is later identified as John Lowery. But how could Lowery have died twice, and how did an American soldier end up in Canada?

Tempe sets off for the answer, exhuming Lowery’s grave in North Carolina and taking the remains to Hawaii for reanalysis—to the headquarters of JPAC, the U.S. military’s Joint POW/ MIA Accounting Command, which strives to recover Americans who have died in past conflicts. In Hawaii, Tempe is joined by her colleague and ex-lover Detective Andrew Ryan (how “ex” is he?) and by her daughter, who is recovering from her own tragic loss. Soon another set of remains is located, with Lowery’s dog tags tangled among them. Three bodies—all identified as Lowery.

And then Tempe is contacted by Hadley Perry, Honolulu’s flamboyant medical examiner, who needs help identifying the remains of an adolescent boy found offshore. Was he the victim of a shark attack? Or something much more sinister?

A complex and riveting tale of deceit and murder unfolds in this, the thirteenth thrilling novel in Reichs’s “cleverly plotted and expertly maintained series” (The New York Times Book Review). With the smash hit Bones now in its fifth season and in full syndication—and her most recent novel, 206 Bones, an instant New York Times bestseller—Kathy Reichs is at the top of her game.

3.0 out of 5 stars Buyer beware 26 Nov 2010
Format:Hardcover
Whilst I am extremely pleased with the service received from this seller, I am equally dissapointed to discover that the product purchased is in fact the same book as "Mortal Remains" under a different title. Unless you read other customer reviews it is not immediately obvious on the Amazon website that this is the case. I have therefore now purchased two books with different titles but the same content and feel somewhat peeved.

4.0 out of 5 stars Tempe Doesn't Enjoy Paradise 18 Sep 2010
By Donald Mitchell HALL OF FAME TOP 500 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Format:Hardcover
"He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches. To him who overcomes I will give to eat from the tree of life, which is in the midst of the Paradise of God." -- Revelation 2:7 (NKJV)

In the middle of a war, mistakes happen. Sometimes those mistakes cost lives. At other times, the mistakes launch improved lives. Spider Bones takes a long look at the difficulties of identifying remains from the Vietnam War and weaves a lot of good science into an intriguing story about a dead man who keeps dying, John Lowery. Along the way, some other little mysteries intrude . . . and Tempe tries to build a little love in Paradise (better known to those who live on Earth as Hawaii). The best-laid plans of all are quickly tossed into Fate's dumpster, and Tempe has all she can do to track down what's really been happening while unlimbering herself from some very awkward personal situations.

One of the high points of this book involves an explanation for a scientific phenomenon that occurs rarely that has always intrigued me. I was glad to find the explanation in the story to satisfy my curiosity about this quirky characteristic, but also to make the story a lot more compelling from a factual and plot perspective.

I just wish Tempe didn't have to suffer so much in her personal life. I suppose this is a plot device so we won't hate her for being so good, beautiful, talented, successful, etc. But it does get a little old.

This is just a"Mortal Remains" under a different title. Luckily I found this out before having two copies of the same book. Amazon have been very good in refunding when this happens, so do not find yourself out of pocket.

4.0 out of 5 stars Compare apples to apples... 31 Aug 2010
By Jill Meyer TOP 500 REVIEWER
Format:Hardcover
I'm a firm believer, when reviewing a book, in comparing a book to its predecessors. In this case, it's possible, because Kathy Reichs has written 12 previous Tempe Brennan novels.

The story she writes here, which takes place in locations from Montreal to North Carolina to Hawaii, involves a whole lot of different issues. Auto-erotic deaths, MIA/KIA's from Vietnam, shark-bitten bodies, Samoan gangs, daughters-with-problems, and an inactive love life are only a few of the diverse things Reichs touches on in "Spider Bones". The thing is, that as disconcerting as all this in-coming might be to a casual Reichs' reader, her fans come to expect it from her novels. I can't exactly compare Reichs' work with, say, Leo Tolstoy's, because she doesn't write as well. No one expects her to produce "War and Peace". She writes with workman-like prose and very odd plot lines. And does so fairly well.

It would be difficult to easily describe the plot of "Spider Bones". As I wrote above, there's a whole lot of "in-coming" and the reader never knows what's coming next. Reichs has the interesting/irritating habit of ending her chapters in cliff-hanging language. It's Reichs trademark and is present in every one of her books I've read.

"Spider Bones" is a good read for the Kathy Reichs fan. It might not appeal to more casual readers, but it is a good addition to her book list.

2.0 out of 5 stars TEMPERAMENTAL IS THE WORD OF THE DAY 28 Feb 2013
Format:Hardcover
Recently took a short trip and decided to take along Kathy Reichs SPIDER BONES on CD to help alleviate the boredom of a ride across the desert. I came away from the experience vowing never to read or listen to another offering in this series. My dissatisfaction stems from many sources. I will attempt to enumerate just a few.

1. Her relationship with Ryan. The green-eyed monster rears its ugly head every time another woman comes on the scene, in this case Honolulu medical examiner Hadley Perry. Temperance is supposed to be and intelligent, logical woman and when it comes to Ryan she is a dithering idiot. All I can say is "Make a decision already!" It's either yes or no....you either love him or you don't.

2. Temperance's daughter Kathy is an exasperating twenty-four year old who behaves like a churlish, insolent brat. Her responses to her mother and others around her were those of a rather petulant sixteen year old rather than an educated young woman.

3. Adding multiple murders and the drug angle sent the story off on a tangent unrelated to the original narrative making an already tedious story, overly convoluted. When you removed all the extraneous material, the solution to the initial mystery was fairly obvious so perhaps this was the reason for Ms. Reich's meandering all over the map with her tale.

4. All of the acronyms in the book and the extensive medical explanations exacerbated my frustration with this book and were mind numbing......although I did add one new word to my vocabulary -chimera. (I always thought it was an inexpensive outdoor fireplace, now I know better).

I have created my own acronym to describe this book. J.U.N.K = JUMBLED -UNEVENTFUL - NOT a KEEPER.
