For the record I am a huge fan of this series.

Spice and Wolf is about the relationship between Lawrence and Holo, how they interact, the challenges facing them, the banter between them, their growing fondness of each other, every aspect that makes them a perfect couple.

Upon their chance meeting, they travel together with Holo making a request of him to take him to the north, along the way as Lawrence is a peddler, he travels from town to town selling his goods, meeting new people, getting into situations alongside Holo and generally having fun with his companion.

They both however get involved in a situation that lasts the entirity of this series, and to be honest its very well done, very exciting and very much likable.

I would say this series will appeal to both males and females looking for something different. There is next to no fanservice(After episode 2, the first 2 episodes have some fanservice moments), some scenes of violence, and that's it really.

Before buying this series on amazon, I had previously watched all of the episodes online. My views of it were mixed, but I felt it was a good enough series that I wanted to buy and keep it.
One of the things I like about 'Spice and Wolf' is its setting. Unlike most animes that take part in the present or near/distant future, 'Spice and Wolf' appears to be set around the late 18th, or early 19th Century - or possibly even longer back. Everything from the background scenery, to the money that's used, to the clothes that people wear, really helps to give an olden times feeling that's almost spiritual. Which goes well with Holo being something of a spirt/god herself.
Speaking of Holo, I find her to be the most memorable character in the series. As well as being a "wise wolf" she can also be playful, aggressive, witty and often unpredictable. Every time she's on screen I can't help but feel anticipated over what she'll do or say next. Some of her dialogue is so clever that it makes me want to hear her words over and over again. The accent that Brina Palencia (English Dub) plays her in is just perfect.
If there is one criticism I would give 'Spice and Wolf' it would be its complexity. The series is heavily based around marketing, sales and profit. Unless you're a merchant like Lawrence, or know that sort of thing like the back of your hand, then you have to pay really close attention to what's being said at all times, otherwise you won't understand half of what's going on.
Also, the progression of the series can sometimes feel slow, with numerous episodes focusing around a single plot, and not much happening in between. You could literally cut the two halves of the series into separate stories that have no connection with each other, other than Lawrence and Holo.

This anime is my absolute hands down favorite anime ever! (and I have watched my fair share of anime)
The world is pretty and has the feeling of an old medieval European one that is full of fantasy, myth and legend. The plot is deep and involves a lot of dialogue which is always very detailed and very entertaining and allows you to grow close to the characters.
The 2 main characters (Holo and Lawrence) are extremely likable and Holo is absolutely brilliant, so full of attitude and so amusing!

I don't want to say too much and give away the plot as I went into it clueless and I believe that is the best way to enjoy an anime. But honestly buy it, support it and give it a chance because it is so enjoyable and you'll want to watch it again again!

There is also manga and light novels available too so you may want to check those out!

I should start off that the reason I only gave it 4 stars is because spice and wolf is based off a light novel series, the end of season 2 only covers the first 3/4 books and it dosent look like they'll be doing any more of the anime (this was produced in 2008 in japan), luckily yen press is translating and publishing all 17 novels into english (theyre at 7 at the moment) plus there is a manga being released (again at volume 7,).
I would recommend this anime to start with then read the novels as they are more heady and indepth and as such arent suited for light readers or for someone who had a passing like for spice and wolf.

The anime is about Lawrence, a travellig merchant (trader) who aquires a hitchicker, enter Holo, the wise wolf of Yoist, the pagan wolf goddess of wheat (who actually can transform into a giant wolf). Lawrence and Holo enter into an agreement for lawrence to escort Holo back to her home in the north and together they get into a debt which the fix by illegal means (series 1), enter into a love triangle gone wrong and start a rebillion over wolf fur (series 2),all the while slowly getting to know and understand each other better and why they boh act the way they do.

Holo and Lawrence appear to have a love-hate relationship but throughout both this series and the next you can see their relationship grow into something more to the point that your biting your nails for lawrence to just shut up and kiss her already (or more likely for Holo to take the inicitive)!
