About the Author

Dr. Frank Lipman is the founder and director of the Eleven Eleven Wellness Center in New York City, where he practices integrative medicine, combining the best of the many alternative practices he has studied with Western medicine. The remit of this wide reaching American book is to revive those who are perpetually exhausted. They are described as being `spent', the original title of this 2nd edition book. It is a condition many are familiar with in this ever faster moving, and financially constrained world we live in.

No quick fix is offered. Instead, a swathe of initiatives are provided, whose accumulated effect is very likely to yield a revival in energy and in health. These are based on decades of practice and research, where the author has helped hundreds of patients in his practice to recover their health. So it is an eminently practical book backed by significant feedback and fine-tuning.

Indeed, the breadth of the book is so all-embracing that it goes way beyond the remit of the title. It is, in effect, a multi-factorial guide to optimum health, covering physical, mental, nutritional, and even social health. Almost by definition, anyone following the guidance to a reasonable degree will undoubtedly become healthier, regardless of their starting point, spent or otherwise.

Whilst it is not without some logistical and technical shortcomings, there is a plethora of sensible advice that will be new and beneficial to most readers. I have studied health a great deal but encountered a number of new concepts and details, such as the specialist herbs Ashwagandha and Eleuthera, and the effect of house air quality on your health.

He sensibly advocates the importance of meditation, and makes it very accessible with some eminently practical guidance for newcomers. Likewise, yoga, which is especially useful for desk-bound workers. He supplies many yoga positions, that are both well photographed and often appropriately easy for someone `spent'.

I have been diagnosed with CFS (Chronic Fatigue Syndrome), and/or adrenal failure by a bunch of different doctors who all couldn't really do anything for me.

This book has made a MASSIVE difference to my life. It explains everything very simply, and you make changes slowly, but that way, they seem to last.

I'd recommend this book to anyone who wakes up tired.

The ideas presented in this book have reinforced some things I had previously learned, but there is also a lot of new and extremely useful information. The book is easy to read and Frank doesn't come at you in a patriarchal or patronising way. It's also easy to incorporate the suggestions into daily life and I have been able to ensure I get the nutrition I need which I just couldn't fit into my hectic schedule previously. I am feeling decidedly more optimistic (and healthier) than I've done in ages! Well worth a look.

Based on the description, I was expecting the book to be a good read of thought-provoking ideas on how to re-invent yourself. It turned out to be an instruction manual (daily plans) and cookbook (recipes) which is less useful if you are already eating healthily.

It surprised me that, while advocating healthy foods, the author recommended pre-washed/pre-cut/packed salads as well as nutritional supplements. Some of these I felt were presented so pushily that I ask myself whether he gets a share of the sales.

This book makes you think how to live healthily and how to slow down, and is written in a very motivating way (albeit a bit too verbose for my taste). So if you need motivation and know you are not living healthily enough, this might be a good read. If you know your food already, there's little new to be found here.

I bought this book after having read reviews on several websites. I thought this book was great, it is clear, well explained and most of all, you will definitely feel a difference when you start the programme.
