Product Description

Product Description

Wardington-Smythe is Britain's greatest hero; gentleman adventurer, master marksman, expert fencer and all-round doer of derring. He is exactly the kind of man you want on the job when the Imperial Commonwealth faces its greatest peril.

It's a shame that he's fictional.

The task of saving the Commonwealth falls instead to Wardington-Smyth's creator, a novelist for whom adventure is changing his supplier of bacon.

Aided only by a street urchin of dubious morality, Spenser Warwick must solve the mystery of scented letters, vanishing airships and abducted ladies whilst not getting drugged in public conveniences. At least not again.

Adventure is certainly not how he imagined it.

SPENSER GOES NORTH is the new novel from the author of the Man From U.N.D.E.A.D. series.

More About the Author

Darren Humphries is English and in his forties.

He is, therefore, a child of the Star Wars era with a corresponding love of science fiction brought about by repeated science fiction movie seasons on BBC2 and, of course, Doctor Who.

As well as being a TV and film science fiction addict since birth (apparently) he has been writing stories since he learned to write, possibly spurred on by placing in a national competition when he was about six years old.

In later years, he has produced a number of science fiction/fantasy/horror novels all of which are now available on Kindle through Amazon and in print through Lulu.com as well as an encyclopedia of Science Fiction television shows (also available through Lulu.com).

Despite all this, he is fairly normal. Well, he thinks so anyway.

He is widowed, has two children and needs to pay the mortgage.

Between the kids and work and all the other adult stuff that he pretends to be grown up about, he still watches and reviews science fiction television and movies on the Sci Fi Freak Site at www.scififreaksite.com

5.0 out of 5 stars A great read 6 May 2014
By Ignite TOP 500 REVIEWER
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Spenser Warwick is the author of the rather turgid Wardington-Smythe adventure novels and is drawn into an adventure of his own. He receives some obscure clues in cheap envelopes which are scented with a rare perfume. A youth named Norris is persuaded to help him as he is drawn into attempting to foil a plot which will damage the Commonwealth.

This is a change from Darren Humphries' recent fare of Agent Ward’s U.N.D.E.A.D. adventures and is set in Victorian times. I loved some of these characters, especially young Norris and The Lady with her wonderfully upfront attitude. I hope we see more in this vein. It's a great read.

5.0 out of 5 stars More delightful Humphries humour 6 May 2014

Delightful characters sprinkled throughout with laugh out loud humour. In a departure from his hugely successful UNDEAD books, Humphries introduces us to his suave yet slightly bumbling main character Spenser. I look forward to further adventures.

5.0 out of 5 stars A new direction 3 July 2014
By NickB
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Having read all the Undead series this new direction and new characters doesn't disappoint. It is 'easy reading' and none the worse for that - best described as a 'ripping yarn' with strong likeable characters. I hope there is a sequel on the way - if there is I will definitely be buying it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Most enjoyable 16 May 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I really enjoyed this old fashioned romp with it's homage to the bygone era of Boy's Own adventures.

The book is full of likeable characters - even the dastardly ones are well-conceived - and tongue in cheek humour. I laughed out loud in places at the scrapes the urbane yet bumbling Spenser gets being dragged into.

My only caveat is the mix of alternate history with (towards the end) a few modern references which, for a moment, pulled me up short.

But that's a minor quibble. Bravo Mr Humphries! I sincerely hope there will be more of Spenser Warwick's adventures to entertain me again in the very near future.
