Product Description

Voted the "book most likely to fill the Harry Potter void" when it was first published in 2001, this second novel from award-winning author Katherine Roberts is a fantasy thriller suitable for readers aged 10 to adult.

Natalie thinks she is an ordinary girl until she sees a spell in the supermarket car park. She soon discovers her mother came from Earthaven, a place of breathtaking wonder where unicorns roam and giant trees talk. Her father is a Thrall who sells spells across the boundary between worlds. And Natalie has inherited powers the exiled spellmage Lord Hawk needs if he is to take his revenge on the Spell Lords who banished him. Snatched from her family and forced to choose sides in a magical battle between two worlds, Natalie's only hope is to join forces with her captor's son, the young spell-caster Merlin. Can they discover Hawk's evil plans in time to save Earthaven and its magic?

"Involving and suspenseful." Sunday Times Children's Book of the Week.

"Roberts knows exactly how to rack up the tension and create parallel universes." The Guardian.

"A thrilling and fast-paced fantasy adventure with shades of Tolkien and Pullman." The Bookseller.

Long-listed for the Carnegie Medal, this edition contains the original British text.

From the Author

Natalie saw the first spell in the supermarket carpark... After that, nothing is what it seems. In this gripping story of kidnap and sorcery spanning two worlds, Natalie discovers her own extraordinary powers and how much is at stake in both worlds as her family and friends struggle to rescue her. Can they save Earthaven, the enchanted realm beyond the Thrallstone gateway, where giant trees weave a new kind of magic, and unicorns and magehounds do battle with an evil force determined to spread its poison across both worlds?

"Roberts writes vividly and dramatically with an accomplished grasp of plotting that carries the reader along." Books for Keeps.
