There are plenty of good nu-fey books out there with shapeshifting, bloodsucking, wandwielding or necromancing PIs, so do not waste your time with this one. The action is slow, the characters as deep as a crushed coke can and the sex too obviously gratuitous. The depth of Rawn's interesting background research is the only redeeming feature. Shame really, since her previous books are benchmarks in the fantasy genre .

I have always enjoyed Ms Rawn's previous books. It had been around 10 years since she had published anything and so I was very keen to read her new book. I am sorry to say that I have not read anything quite so bad since Patricia Cornwall published Hornets Nest (after which I couldn't bring myself to read another Cornwall novel). The title and cover are possibly the best things about this book, which is a complete and utter mess.

Having been introduced to the Dragon Prince and Dragon Star Trilogies I fell in love with Melanie Rawn's writing. Anyone who buys this book expecting it to be like her other books is in for a surprise (although I think the title really gives it away!)- it is nothing like them. But this is not to say it's not good. If you read it with an open mind it is definitely worth it. I fell for Lachlan, the male lead, and Holly McClure is an excellent heroine, and it's just as good after a second read. If you're looking for a love story with a fantasy twist then this is a book for you, but if you are looking for a book like her others then it may not be. After having a breakdown Melanie wanted to write something completely different and I think she really succeeded with Spellbinder; I look forward to reading the next one.
