Book Description

(The Spell of Binding: Part One, is a 27,000 word, witty, fantasy comedy).

THE MAGIC

The World was almost destroyed by science – billions died. The survivors gave up looking for God and looked within themselves. They could hear a new song emanating from the ruins of the past. An ancient song, older than religion and time itself – they heard the magic.

THE DEMON ARMY

But the holocaust caused a spell uttered eons ago – when the magic was strong – to weaken. A spell that now released unmentionable creatures back into the world; creatures their ancestors had banished. Science failed to destroy humanity, now it’s the powerful Demon Kings turn to try – back with vengeance and a vast army.

HOPE

Powerful sorcerers could stand in his way, but they have grown old and tired with time, leaving the hope of all New Mankind on the shoulders of a female magus, a slaphappy, lovesick human, a drunken whimsical elf, and an ambitious dwarf, all looking for a Spell that has been hidden for a thousand generations.

PART ONE

Simeon, the head of the Council of Magi, has spent decades deciphering an ancient leather bound book. He sends word to Minika, a sorceress close to where he believes the Spell is hidden – a female magus who is not quite what she seems – and with the aid of a human, an elf and a dwarf, she heads out into the barren wasteland to try and reach the Spell first before Vorr, the demon king and his vast army. But the demons are the least of Minika’s worries. Someone else seems hell bent on stopping her – someone who is manipulating magic that hasn’t been used for thousands of years. Also the Great Prophetess has just announced the prophecy that Vorr has been waiting to hear for over two thousand years: “In a time of great sorrow seven will heal the world.”

Only a couple of things let the book down, the Typo errors and the spelling, otherwise I as with Glen's other books enjoyed the story.

4.0 out of 5 stars A blend between scifi and fantasy. 15 Oct. 2012
By Paul A. Wunderlich - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
The undertaking of writing this book must have been quite exiting, as the author brilliantly sought to intertwine scifi and fantasy--a feat difficult to manage. The book is not seamless during the endeavor to bind scifi and fantasy, but the idea is certainly magical and captivating. As one is introduced into the world of The Spell of Binding, one can only speculate on how the author is going to pull off the feat he just portrayed in the prologue.

1. General Opinion: This book is definitely a wild experiment to intertwine scifi and fantasy. It's not an easy task and although I admire the endeavor, I feel more depth is lacking to complete the fusion. As in many movies--like Star Wars--technology drives man to find 'Magic'. Magic is still a mysterious force and a thing not all are able to control. For example, the Jedi are the only beings who can wield a Light-saber, employing the force as a means to do so. In this book, unlike in Star Wars, Magic is found through man's devolution as he slowly returns to his origins and within his roots he understands that Magic--and not science--is the means to his end.

The book is painted with sprouts of humor and wit, which makes the read very enjoyable, light, and hearty. Sadly, it's a bit short and as such some elements are not explored in depth--a detail I would encourage to further expand is how scifi and fantasy could possibly flow seamlessly together, without extricating the reader from the river of thoughts.

2. Magical elements: Throughout the book the reader is exposed to a broad generalization of how magic in this world works--what I found to be quite different from other worlds; which makes it refreshing.

3. The Characters: The characters are well rounded and have qualities you might enjoy. For some readers, finding a dwarf, a human, and an elf together might be quite repetitive and found un-enjoyable. I particularly enjoyed the mixture as it has the author's own twist; and how each species came to be is smart and savvy.

4. The Spell of Binding: The selling point of this book is it's title, as it is used throughout the adventure and upon understanding how the Spell works and why, one is immediately fascinated. Another fantasy author has used a similar approach to create a barrier that wards off evil: Terry Goodkind in his epic 'The Sword of Truth'. Although they are very distinct in origin, the barrier's function is similar.

5. Why you may like this piece: You may enjoy this title because of its singularity and it's experimental approach to intertwine scifi and fantasy--a feat I enjoyed throughout the reading. The humor is great and there is a tone of 'care' and 'sweetness' embroidered along the paragraphs of this book.

If you only have little time to spare for your daily reading, this might be for you. It's short and easily digested.

6. Why you may dislike this piece: If you are a reader who cannot tolerate a single typo, this may not be for you. Although scarce, I picked up some typos along the journey. I understand that it is difficult to make a piece seamless and free of typos (even the best editors miss one or two).

You may also find the junction between an elf, a dwarf, and a human annoying; as it has happened quite frequently after Tolkien set the record with unifying Gimli, Legolas, and Aragorn.
