4.0 out of 5 stars Bangbangbangbangbang 6 July 2011
Format:Kindle Edition
This first outing for new epublisher Snubnose (from the people behind Spinetingler) is a good, solid selection. Ranging from WW1 to the Texas/Mexico border, & all sorts of madness inbetween, each one is just perfect. Highly enjoyable as a taster for some of the newer names out there as well. I had already read Nigel Bird (Dirty Old Town) & Nik Korpon (Old Ghosts) before & both their stories here were excellent. Richard Thomas' novel Transubstantiate has just landed on my Kindle based on how good his effort here was & Jonathan Woods Bad JuJu shouldn't be far behind. This was W D Countys debut & he rocks big style here. Can't wait to get more of his stuff. Matthew C Funk was new to me as well & will be well worth a look in the future. Buy this now if you want to try some new names writing at the top of their game.

5.0 out of 5 stars Smart, stylish and hardcore. 2 July 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
This is is a great collection of six, strong, mature pieces of noir writing.

There's not a bad story in the bunch though if I had to choose a favorite I'd probably go for Jonathon Woods'magnificent Crash & Burn.

Fantastic cover, too.

5.0 out of 5 stars Well written, dark and edgy 3 Sep 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
Speedloader is a collection of six short stories, published by the excellent new publishers on the block, Snubnose Press. Ranging from World War One to Texan/Mexican noir, Speedloader is an excellent taster of the talent contained within.

Kicking off with a 'You Dirty Rat' by the inimitable Nigel Bird, this is an excellent tale of revenge set during World War One. Nigel Bird is fast becoming one of the top writers in his genre and 'You Dirty Rat' is a fine example of his talent for storytelling.

'Plastic Soldiers' by W.D. County is a tough read, uncompromising with an ending you'll never forget. I'll be looking forward to reading more from County in the future.

'Cuffs' by Matthew C. Funk is another cool entry into Funk's world of bad people doing increasingly bad things. I've been reading a lot of his short story work lately and Funk never manages to disappoint. Excellent writing style which always packs a punch!

Next up 'Mori Obscura' by Nik Korpon. A dark tale, with an ambiguous ending which leaves you wanting more. Korpon is another writer I always enjoy reading and I'd highly recommend looking up his work elsewhere.

'Herniated Roots' by Richard Thomas is a good addition, well written and nicely done. Not having read any of Thomas' work previously, I'll definitely be searching for more of work.

Finishing with 'Crash and Burn' by Jonathan Woods, this an expansive tale, taking on multiple facets of storytelling, which takes place in the Texas/Mexico border. Well told, nicely plotted, with an ending which works perfectly.

All in all, Speedloader is an excellent anthology of short stories. If you like your stories well written, dark and edgy, then this one is a must read!
