I own "Speed-Link Medusa NX 5.1", "Roccat Kave 5.1" and "Tritton AX Pro". I broke them all so I decided to buy a replacement. All of them have pros and cons.

Roccat Kave 5.1:
PROS: Best build quality, best control box, best comfort on your ears since they have big empty space inside for them and soft ear cushions.
CONS: Comfort comes with weakness - 5.1 effects are weaker and I think "speakers aliment at a 12°" adds to that problem. Unfortunately, headband will make your head hurt because headphone pressure is concentrated into 3 small squares on top of your head. Sound is not very good and feels like big speakers closed inside a tin can. So I won't buy these any more.

Tritton AX Pro:
PROS: Best sound quality. It has that real cinema sound.
CONS: Surround effects are weaker and don't have vibration effect like "Medusa".

Speed-Link Medusa NX 5.1:
PROS: Best 5.1 surround effects. I think its due to the fact that speakers are closer to your ears. Sub-woofer can create very good rumble effect (for example during in game "earthquake"). Sits comfortable on your head since it has softer headband cushion which distributes weight more gradually. Also "Speed-Link" fixed old weak point (place where you adjust height) by using better plastic and design.
CONS: Less comfortable to ears than "Roccat Kave" or "Tritton AX Pro".

I decided to choose between "Tritton PC510 HDa" (new replacement for "Tritton AX Pro") or "Speed-Link Medusa NX 5.1". "Tritton PC510 HDa" have better comfort on ears, but "Medusa 5.1" have better surround and rumble effects. I was nearly going for "Tritton PC510 HDa" but then I was hit by very simple idea on how to fix Medusa's comfort issue. I cut two 27.

Firstly I would like to give a little background to my purchase. I had an old pair of Speedlink Medusa's which came to an unfortunate end after nearly 3 years of service. I was sorry to see them go, as they were brilliant and I got them at a time that surround sound headsets weren't so common, (or they weren't promoted so heavily!) But I was interested to see what I could get now and my god the choice is rather overwhelming. 5.1 or 7.1, virtual or real, USB or composite the list goes on so I spent a lot of time researching all the brands, finding as many reviews as possible from all the leading makes. Unfortunately headsets are quite difficult to get decent reviews on as it's a very personal thing. In the end I found this newer model of my old headset and decided to take the plunge and buy them. Boy was I glad.

Firstly the Speedlinks are real 5.1 surround sound opposed to virtual surround sound. The difference for those who don't know is virtual surround sound headphones have only a single speaker in each ear that utilise advanced built in sound drivers to recreate surround sound. They usually connect via USB and will completely ignore your computers sound card should you have one. Real has separate speakers for each channel and individual connection for each channel as is traditional. This in my opinion leads to a better surround sound experience because this headset is fantastic. Playing things like Fallout 3 or New Vegas brings them alive and really immerses you in the game. I'm not the best person to ask about FPS games as I more of a casual gamer but from the few rounds of Battlefield and Counter Strike that I play the headset gives you a really good sense of position. You can hear when they are behind you or off to one side.

I bought this headset specially to play games and have a better 'positional' experience. What I've found is that the sound in games is not much better than in a stereo headset and I can't really figure out if a noise comes from behind or front. This is consistent with many reviews which say that it's not really possible to recognize the direction of a sound when there are 4 speakers next to your ear... So I woun't recomend this 'just' for gaming.

Now watching movies is a complete different thing. After enabling 5.1 the audio sounds way different and gives a very good surround experience.

The headsets feels quite sturdy and the ear pads are *super* comfortable.

At around £50 I think this headset is a very good choice compared with the other options, if you already have a 5.1 audio card.

This is the best true 5.1 headset on the market, especially for the price. I used mine happily for years until I finally broke it, but it took some beating. I still use the mic, just removed it from headset and taped it to the underside of my desk, mic must be a foot and a half away from my face hole and it still picks up my drone with great clarity.
