It treats basic areas of speech science, such as basic speech acoustics, instrumentation and speech perception with regard to theories and practical applications. This third edition presents recent versions of theories of speech motor control and perception. It takes into account many of the advances and changes in devices and techniques since 1983, especially with regard to the use of computers. The sections on theories of speech perception and research tools have been revised, updated and reorganized. Some figures have been redrawn and new figures added, to show the relationships between tongue positions, glottal stops and oral articulation, and array of techniques and instruments available for studying speech production. Due to the broad perspective taken, the work could also serve as a reference text for graduate students.

I would highly recommend this book to all speech and language therapy/ audiology students. This compact, reader-friendly textbook provides a clear, concise introduction to speech science, and covers most of the basic information on acoustics, the acoustic analysis of speech, speech anatomy and physiology, and speech perception. Also, in this 4th edition, you'll get the opportunity to learn by reading the textbook and then listening to examples of word sounds on a companion website, which I thought was pretty hands-on!

"Speech Science" the best primer is updated

This text has, for the past 10 years, been the best and most prestigious of introductory books in our field. It is a fine lead-in for students wondering how speech is constructed. A follow-on for the more advanced student is my "Acoustics of Speech Communication: Fundamentals, Speech Perception Theory and Technology" 1999, Allyn and Bacon. J.M. Pickett

There is one major error in the text. Page 101 is wrong. I emailed the publishers but got no response. Be careful with some of the figures. Other than that, the book is great!

I wouldn't recommend this textbook for a couple of reasons:
1. It is not an easy read- -Since acoustics is not the easiest topic to learn about, one should look into a textbook that better explains the information in a simpler way that will benefit more students.
2. I was told to purchase this textbook for a university level acoustics course and out of the entire class, not one student seems to enjoy reading the textbook, nor seems to understand the information clearly.
I'm unsure about the other acoustic textbooks that are available out there, but I hope that there is a better one for students because this one is confusing and complicated- - also, I know many others that are not fans.
