Firing the Imagination on all Cylinders 11 April 2013
By Winter - Published on
If you love the fantastic, the Spectrum series of books is for you. Since year one, I've bought almost every volume without regret. This isn't "Fine Art" in the "it belongs in a museum" sense of the word but instead each volume is a showcase of the year's best contributions in various areas, from book covers to statues to concept art. Entries are judged by a panel of experts and the selections shown are printed beautifully. Because many of these works were created for a commercial purpose, some works are more "eye candy" that's been digitally tweaked here and there, but I find no problem in enjoying it all.

Inside each Spectrum book is a collection of some of the year's finest fantasy, science fiction, and horror art. The pop culture bandwidth is fully explored, from heroes like Batman and Superman to Cthulhu with some Tolkein and Conan in between. You'll see statues, book covers, paintings, illustrations and more. Some of the work is physical, some digital, some a combination of both (and each is tagged with artist, medium, and client). Every volume showcases at least one artist, paying special tribute to their work.

Reading through a Spectrum collection fires the imagination: so many different expressions of creativity and such varying fantastic worlds that I do look forward to a new Spectrum every year. Be advised that if nudity, violence or gore bothers you, some of these works will have one or more of these things in them though not (in my opinion) depicted in a way that is shocking or overwhelming. Highly recommended reading just the same.

I have collected all of this series of books since I fond them, but I didn't get started at #1, so now I'm getting the ones that I don't have. I love the Sci Fi/Fantasy art and these books are great for that.

neoclassical 3 Mar. 2000
By Scott - Published on
This book is the single best contemporary art book in existence. The term Neoclassical cannot do it justice and could not really apply because these works are so underappreciated. The sheer variety of artwork ensures that there is something for every taste and always something more to discover in it. If you like art or fantasy or sci fi, or pretty colors, BUY THIS BOOK.
