The album opens to the soft sounds of an opera singer warbling her way through a few notes before the soothing synthpop style beats kick in and "It's hurting for the first time" wends it's way into your conciousness..never to leave.
"Kunstliche Welten" is the only song on Spectators that is in german, all the other songs are sung in english. This makes it stand out, probably why they chose it for the ep you get with the import version of the album. The Ep has two extra versions of the title track and a new song called "F".
You get some bands that are carried by the music and the singer is just there, doesn't appear to do an awful lot to make the band special. The nice thing about Wolfsheim is the singer really makes the songs, this is especially evident in some of the more relaxing songs on Spectators, "For you", "Touch and "Blind". His singing style is unique and highly memorable.
The four songs that I *really* like from this album are "once in a lifetime", "I don't love you anymore", "Sleep somehow" and "Heroin, she said". "sleep somehow" is a lot more club friendly than most of the album.. it's almost drum and bass style differs a fair bit from the usual Wolfsheim synthpoppish style that you'll have become used to until this point of the album *must not bounce.....The End*
I was neither disappointed with what I got, nor totally overjoyed. It's an album with the odd good track but overall it's either standard electro-pop, or at its worst the odd track is below standard.
You have to give credit to the guys though who made this album. They are in a period of transition, they gradually changing their musical style from a goth-ish style of electro to a more listener-friendly electro/EBM. On the whole I don't approve of bands losing their credibility in an effort to become more commercial, but for this group I think it is a bit more complicated than that.
They are not trying to become huge worldwide, they have just realised that it was time for a change and maybe their music should be altered in an effort to at least attract a few more listeners. It's not always bad for a band to change musical style, in fact the best groups are notorious for it.
Take a listen to 'Once in a Lifetime' it is the best song on here.
