About the Author

Mich Turner’s pioneering work in the world of creative cake decoration means she is often described as the queen of couture cakes. She originally trained as a Food Scientist and was Patisserie Buyer at Harvey Nichols before founding her hugely successful Little Venice Cake Company in 1999. Mich’s bespoke classic and contemporary creations have graced the table of her Majesty the Queen, Madonna, Pierce Brosnan, Paul McCartney, Cheryl Cole and David Beckham. It’s no wonder then that Vogue, Tatler and Stella magazines regularly feature her delicious designs. Mich has also been a consultant to numerous TV shows, including Heston Blumenthal’s Feast, Rachel Allen’s Bake!, Kirstie’s Homemade Home and of course her own series, Couture Cakes. As a leading authority on special occasion cakes, Mich runs successful masterclasses around the world aimed at all levels of ability. She was Harpers Bazaar and Chanel Entrepreneur of the Year 2006 and is the author of four highly successful books: Spectacular Cakes (best Dessert Book, Gourmand World Cookbook Awards), Fantastic Party Cakes, Couture Wedding Cakes and Cake Masterclass (best book for food professionals, Gourmand World Cookbook Awards). Little Venice Cake Company Celebration Cakes are available under licence in Sainsbury’s, Waitrose and Tesco, providing the opportunity to sample the luxury of LVCC at a price point all can afford. LVCC already provides couture cakes exclusively for Harrods. In 2010 Mich was awarded an MBE for her outstanding services to the Catering Industry and in 2011, Little Venice Cake Company launched a new international range of cake baking and decorating equipment and Mich launched a range of edibles in conjunction with Silver Spoon. Both ranges are set to expand in 2012.

This is a beautiful book, some fabulous ideas and easy to follow guidance.PLEASE BE AWARE THAT THIS IS THE AMERICAN VERSION OF SPECTACULAR CAKES. The only difference to this book and the other Mich Turner book of Spectacualr cakes is that the recipes are done in ounces and cups, not ounces and grammes, and the list of suppliers at the back are all in America, other than that, page for page it is the same book!!!!BE AWARE THAT THE PERFECT PARTNERS OFFER ON THESE TWO BOOKS WILL LAND YOU WITH TWO IDENTICAL BOOKS!!!

I bought this along with another Mich Turner book, and I have to say that I wish I had only bought one of them (the other one!). So much of the information is just the same in both books, the one saving grace was the addition of a Lime & Coconut Cake recipe in this book............... until I went to gather the ingredients together, and realised there's absolutely no mention of how many limes you need!!!!!

This isn't a cheap book, and I feel that fundamental mistakes like that shouldn't happen in a quality product. Please, before buying this book, look through the wedding cakes book and compare the two - and just choose one of them, you really don't need them both!

This is a great book. The cakes are fantastic (even if some of the colours are not quite my taste). The designs are becoming classics in the world of cake decorating. Techniques and tips are explained clearly. The photographs are gorgeous. I would recommend this to anyone, beginner or experienced cake decorator. The only poor part are the designs for biscuits, they are nothing like the quality of the cakes (if you are looking for beautiful iced biscuits have a look at Peggy Porchen's book, her cakes are lovely too.) However I love this book and look at it regularly. Buy it.

I own in excess of 30 cake decorating books and this is by far the best book I've seen on the subject. Delicious recipes, concise instructions, inspiring contemporary and classical designs and beautiful photography throughout. This book would make the perfect present for someone with a passion for cakes.

I bought this book after I looked at the author's website and was amazed by the beautiful cakes they make ([...] I thought the book might be a good source of inspiration - I'm getting married in August and was toying with the idea of making our cake. Anyway, I was really impressed with this book as not only does it feature all the gorgeous cakes that I loved from the website, but it tells you how to make them too in a very clear way - I'm going to try one out for a birthday party this weekend. Trust me, if you are thinking of buying a book on party cakes - this is the one for you. Other books are okay for either decoration or baking, but this is the first one I've come across that cover both so well, as well as tips and techniques for presenting cakes. Happy cake making!

This book starts off with some nice recepies like "coffe and Walnut cake" and a very interesting fruit cake recepie, You will also find a meringue recepie and various recepies to make cookies. Lots of photographs troughout the book and a section to learn making your own cake stand, the use of dowels and pillars is well explaned too. The designs are clean and neat, classical: lace designs, painitng technique explained and a nice section on choccolate work. At the back there is a section on patterns too. Recommended

I got this book to help make my wedding cake last year, which came out perfect. The actual cake receipes are lovely and the directions for decorating are straight forward to follow. This though is not a book that will make anyone into a cake decorator, I enjoy baking and so am not a complete novice. It also took a few practices to get my own wedding cake right and a little bit of creativity to make the whole thing work. To find a lot of the utensils needed I would advise to search online for them rather than a local kitchen craft shop as they can be expensive.

I love the introduction of this book. There are different recipes to the norm with good detail about quantities, icing guides, stacking guides etc. I found, however, that the traditional cakes were either iced with spots, stripes, lace or were painted! I found I was turning the pages very quickly as many designs were essentially the same theme reinvented with perhaps a few flowers or butterflies added here and there to ring the changes. It went from traditional, to chocolate, to a mix of traditional and novelty, which felt like a confusing layout. The chocolate cake section was fantastic, although from the front cover of the book a little unexpected and I felt these cakes were a little lost in the middle of the book. Cakes like the green Easter cake, the purple Christmas cake, the red Parcel cake, the hideous 70s revival purple Clown cake (and I mean, hideous!!) were so simplistic and basic they have no place in a book called "Spectacular cakes" and would suit an "Easy cakes for kids" type book. Meringues, even stacked, seem to me to have no place in this book at all, although they look great. I would have liked more detail about each cake, and less cakes packed in. The cover cake is the most exciting one of them all and from this I'd expected more of the same unique designs inside. I wanted more from this book and whilst the techniques are very readable and very useful for reference, and the cakes in the main are lovely (sorry, I can't get the clown cake out of my mind), I'm not sure I'll use this book very much.
