Incredible! This album has been out for 17 years and no one has sung its praises yet. Well, it's never too late so here goes...this is a must-have for all vintage Rhythm & Blues aficionados.
Many of the genre's big names are there, Roy Milton, Joe and Jimmy Liggins, but also some lesser-known names like Herman Manzy and Jesse Thomas. All of them have one thing in common, though - they combine the sheer exuberance and zest of this type of music with a high standard of production which is symptomatic of label boss Art Rupe's approach to his work. The end result is a veritable feast of goodtime jump blues "marked by a front line of horns (heavy on the saxophones), backed by a powerful rhythm section and propelled by a strong 'back beat' on the drums," to quote compiler, Billy Vera.
Unfortunately, it appears that there will be no volume 2 in this series, but make sure you snap this one up anyway - it's sheer jump blues heaven!
