Working as a drama tutor for adults with learning Disabilities, and managing other tutors who do the same,I am always on the lookout for new ideas which will actually WORK!
This book is packed with very practical suggestions, activities and tips for planning and developing a meaningful Drama/movement programme for students with a wide range of disabilities.
This book would be of particular benefit to tutors who are new to working with Disability. It gives guidelines on how to set up the room, start the session etc. Tried and tested.

Although quite helpful if you were new to teaching drama, you could quite easily work your way thought the book as it does contain comprehensive lessons. In saying this i have found the lessons do not lead natually to an end piece of work that sums up that lesson. It does contain some nice exercises yet i found in each lesson slightly too many games.

I particularly like the information at the end of the book on creating drama with severe disabilities. I only wish there were more examples as it was very helpful.

Very disappointing 26 Oct 2010
By Andy
Format:Paperback
I work in a Further Education college as a Tutor of Learners with Learning Difficulties and/or Disabilities and I teach drama for a 1 1/2 hour session a week. My group are all pre-entry level students, all with moderate/severe learning disabilities and most with limited verbal skills and imagination. As this subject was new to me, I was hoping for some inspiration and a way to find out how to structure the class each week. This book was very disappointing. It assumes that the students are completely new to each other (they're not) and it also assumes that learning disabilities are on the whole mild, with maybe one or two exceptions. Some of the games/activities could be adapted, but on the whole, they are way too high a level for my students. There is a 4 page 'token' chapter on working with people with multiple and profound disabilities, which was semi-interesting, however, I also found it to be very stereotyped and quite patronising in part. A far better book that meets the needs of this group of learners would be Groupwork with Learning Disabilities - Creative Drama by Anna Chesner.
