...they do it with style.

This is not your typical American pseudo-propaganda telling a tale of soldiers who think they're the best in the world. Mais non!

Instead we have beautiful sweeping landscapes setting the scene for the brutality of war, made all the more poignant by characters who for all their machismo, we can relate to as mere human being caught up in human struggle.

I don't mean to suggest that this is an art-house tour de force, but there is most assuredly an artistic eye behind the camera, who takes the rough tough soldiers against the world story and tells it with a light touch, and what I can only call; panache.

There are some heavy-handed moments of moralising, but that might be due more to the philosophical mindset of the French, rather than an Oliver Stone sensibilty which attempts to club you round the head with a message.

Oh, and there's a couple of explosions and loads of firefights if you like that kinda thing.

Really surprised how amazing this film was- great acting and keeps you on the edge of your seat all the way through. Also
there are some really poignant moments that you don't always find in action movies. I would say a "must watch movie." as it gets you
thinking about the bravery of journalism aswell

After Diane Kruger's journalist is kidnapped in the Tribal Areas of Pakistan a crack team of French commandos is dispatched to the rescue.

It's hard to describe this film any more fully without giving away any key plot points, but I think that fans of 1950's and 1960's Hollywood war films will enjoy this. There's a good dose of the Magnificent Seven thrown in there too.

Plus points are the scenery and photography, which are both absolutely stunning, and the performances which are as good, or better, than could be expected given the nature of the material. The final third of the film is particularly strong. Downsides are the one-dimensional villain, some unrealistic and bloodless action sequences and some clunky moralising.

Largely in well-subtitled French with some English dialogue.

In French with English subtitles and some English dialogue, this film was made with the co-operation of the French Special Forces and is a straight shoot without any CGI. It is very entertaining and the story is fairly believable. The action flows from scene to scene and is realistic. If you enjoy good old fashioned shoot em up action films you are going to love this. The actors underwent training with the French Commandos and French Commandos were used as extras in the opening part of the film.

There are some good extras including a very detailed documentary about the making of the film, this includes preparation, training, scene location and the actual shoot.

A great film for a Sunday afternoon or with your mates and a few beers.

not the polish of a Holywood inspired production, but gritty and real enough highlighting the courage and conviction of Special Forces members if you like this you will love Lone Survivor. Not normally one for subtitle movies but the occassional english dialogue breaks it up enough and the action is intense at times

A great story, magnificent locations and excellent action, this is one of the best war films of 2011, just because it is in French with English subtitles don't be put off. This is certainly on par with Acts Of Valour but actors play the parts and not real navy seals as in Acts Of Valour. The film was shot on location and adds to the authenticity of an excellent stand out film, don't miss out ,based on true events and up to date this is a must see film.

The problem with many French films is that many French people see the cinema as a form of art and not as entertainment.

In spite of having lived for more than half of my life in French-speaking Switzerland and speaking the language as a native (after 25 years, it was about bloody time), I tend to avoid French films. Unless you have a PhD in some arty subject AND are very boring, you won't enjoy French films.

Special Forces is an exception. A journalist (played by the beautiful Diane Kruger) gets kidnapped in Afghanistan and a group of French special forces soldiers come to the rescue. Similar stories have been told before and you cannot call the film original, but it is fun. Lots of action. No musings about politics and whether the West should have intervened in Afghanistan at all, just poor adrenalin.

I thoroughly recommend it. Ooooouuuaaaiiiiii!
