5.0 out of 5 stars Great escapism, a good action film. 29 April 2012
By Trev-R TOP 500 REVIEWER
Format:Blu-ray|Amazon Verified Purchase
In French with English subtitles and some English dialogue, this film was made with the co-operation of the French Special Forces and is a straight shoot without any CGI. It is very entertaining and the story is fairly believable. The action flows from scene to scene and is realistic. If you enjoy good old fashioned shoot em up action films you are going to love this. The actors underwent training with the French Commandos and French Commandos were used as extras in the opening part of the film.

There are some good extras including a very detailed documentary about the making of the film, this includes preparation, training, scene location and the actual shoot.

A great film for a Sunday afternoon or with your mates and a few beers.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not entirely shot through with Action cliches. 9 Oct 2012
By Peter Roxburgh TOP 1000 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Format:DVD
If you are looking for an action film that isn't completely shot through with Hollywood cliches then this comes close.

With a mix of English and French (mostly French), this film follows a group of French commandos who look to rescue a female war report (Diane Kruger) who has been captured by the Taliban because she wrote nasty things about one of their leaders.

If you are looking for a film that digs into the political, social complexities of fighting a war in Afghanistan, then this isn't going to be that film. This is shot by a director whose experience is based on filming documentaries about, surprise surprise (said in French), the Special Forces. So much of the film really focuses on the Special Forces.

There are a couple of layers of social commentary camouflage but they are thin and don't hide the fact that this mostly an action film about the Special forces.

There are also a couple of holes in regards to plot. I still didn't understand why the commandos didn't get picked up after the rescue (this isn't a spoiler). But had they got picked up, it would have made for a very short film.

Not a bad film by any means - a nice change from the extremely predictable HOllywood nonsense. If you're looking for a good film for a boys night in or a lazy Sunday afternoon without girls then this would be worth watching.

Hope that helps.

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome story and action and not American! 28 Nov 2012

I was very pleasently suprised by this film. Orginally streamed it from Lovefilm and had to purchase it afterwards. A good, realistic story sees a team of French spec ops battling the Taliban after rescuing a jounalist. The beauty of this film is that you really feel for each of the characters and I must say that I was almost in tears at the end.

Some excellent full on action scenes that are a must see and refreshingly this is a French film with both French and English spoken by the characters. This is a bonus as it is not the usual Gung Ho US films that you usually see.

A must see for any action fan.
