5.0 out of 5 stars Great escapism, a good action film. 29 April 2012
By Trev-R TOP 500 REVIEWER
Format:Blu-ray|Amazon Verified Purchase
In French with English subtitles and some English dialogue, this film was made with the co-operation of the French Special Forces and is a straight shoot without any CGI. It is very entertaining and the story is fairly believable. The action flows from scene to scene and is realistic. If you enjoy good old fashioned shoot em up action films you are going to love this. The actors underwent training with the French Commandos and French Commandos were used as extras in the opening part of the film.

There are some good extras including a very detailed documentary about the making of the film, this includes preparation, training, scene location and the actual shoot.

A great film for a Sunday afternoon or with your mates and a few beers.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not entirely shot through with Action cliches. 9 Oct 2012
By Peter Roxburgh TOP 1000 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Format:DVD
If you are looking for an action film that isn't completely shot through with Hollywood cliches then this comes close.

With a mix of English and French (mostly French), this film follows a group of French commandos who look to rescue a female war report (Diane Kruger) who has been captured by the Taliban because she wrote nasty things about one of their leaders.

If you are looking for a film that digs into the political, social complexities of fighting a war in Afghanistan, then this isn't going to be that film. This is shot by a director whose experience is based on filming documentaries about, surprise surprise (said in French), the Special Forces. So much of the film really focuses on the Special Forces.

There are a couple of layers of social commentary camouflage but they are thin and don't hide the fact that this mostly an action film about the Special forces.

There are also a couple of holes in regards to plot. I still didn't understand why the commandos didn't get picked up after the rescue (this isn't a spoiler). But had they got picked up, it would have made for a very short film.

Not a bad film by any means - a nice change from the extremely predictable HOllywood nonsense. If you're looking for a good film for a boys night in or a lazy Sunday afternoon without girls then this would be worth watching.

Hope that helps.

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome story and action and not American! 28 Nov 2012
By Harj
Format:DVD|Amazon Verified Purchase
I was very pleasently suprised by this film. Orginally streamed it from Lovefilm and had to purchase it afterwards. A good, realistic story sees a team of French spec ops battling the Taliban after rescuing a jounalist. The beauty of this film is that you really feel for each of the characters and I must say that I was almost in tears at the end.

Some excellent full on action scenes that are a must see and refreshingly this is a French film with both French and English spoken by the characters. This is a bonus as it is not the usual Gung Ho US films that you usually see.

A must see for any action fan.

4.0 out of 5 stars One of the best SF movies I've ever seen on film 28 Oct 2012
By Fallguy
Format:DVD
Okay, as SF movies go this was by far much better that rubbish such as Act of Valour, Navy Seals, Behind Enemy Lines 2 etc. Yes, there are a few things which are questionable such as when Kovax and the rest of the SF soldiers arrive at their FOB in Afghan as for those of you will see and any of you who have been there, riding around on a motorbike with kids on it, anywhere in Afghan, particularly if you're a member of ISAF just wouldn't happen but, the movie was good, the action was good and, as I saw earlier in a review, those French troops were not impervious to bullets, if you are trained well it is amazing what can come of it; its a known fact that French Special Forces are amongst the best in the world.

Am not saying there are some instances where you don't question the film but, its a hulliva lot better than your standard Hollywood SF (Special Forces) BS (sure I don't need to put that in brackets) where everything contained in the film is just totally...unreal, as I said...BS.

Just remember folks, a lot of the soldiering and battle scenes by these guys in this film is possible, particularly with the right training; to drive your enemy back, even if they outnumber you is to take the fight to them.

Enjoy the film but remember, it is just a film.

Cheers, out...

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent movie 20 Mar 2012
Format:Blu-ray
I enjoyed this film despite some mixed reviews. If you like 'Tears Of The Sun' or the 'Bravo Two Zero' story then you will enjoy this. The film looks and sounds amazing on Bluray. A great bit of entertainment that holds up to repeat viewings. Enjoy it for what it is - pure escapist entertainment.

3.0 out of 5 stars Entertaining-but unbelievable 2 Jun 2012
Format:DVD|Amazon Verified Purchase
I enjoyed watching this film.It started off well (great opening sequence) but then got silly.Special forces soldiers making emotional decisions and ignoring the mission to engage the enemy who are slaughtering villagers!!Falling in love with the hostage!Do real french special forces behave this way?I would think they are much harder..However the film is worth seeing .Great location shots ,music predicatable(film makers are becoming lazy using the same wailing singing,post-Gladiator).Plot predictable.

5.0 out of 5 stars Special Forces 18 April 2012
By Batsy
Format:Blu-ray|Amazon Verified Purchase
A great story, magnificent locations and excellent action, this is one of the best war films of 2011, just because it is in French with English subtitles don't be put off. This is certainly on par with Acts Of Valour but actors play the parts and not real navy seals as in Acts Of Valour. The film was shot on location and adds to the authenticity of an excellent stand out film, don't miss out ,based on true events and up to date this is a must see film.
