Book Description

Learn how to program MySQL 4.X, the new release of the hottest open source database server!
Written by experts in MySQL programming for both enterprise and Web database applications.
Covers MySQL 4.X and its new features- nested subqueries, UNICODE, stored procedures, stronger system security, plus more.
MySQL user base is growing—more than 2 million users plus companies with mission-critical applications such as Xerox, Yahoo!, the U.S. Census Bureau, and NASA. MySQL is one of the top relational database systems today because of its speed, reliability, and price (it is Open Source, so its free). Unlike many databases, MySQL is easy to install and works nearly seamlessly with many applications across several operating platforms including Linux, UNIX, and Microsoft Windows. The most popular use for MySQL is on the Web for content management. Originally released in 1998, MySQL became popular because it interfaces easily with C, C++, Java, Perl, PHP, and Python. In late 2001 MySQL received the coveted Linux Journal Readers Choice Award for the fourth year in a row, beating the second place candidate by 2 to 1. Also in 2001 MySQL received the Linux Magazine Editors Choice Award as the top Linux database for the second year running.
Arthur Fuller is the chief developer for ETS Escape Routes, an international travel agency. Specifically he built the reservation management system, much of it in MySQL. In a previous position Arthur developed an enterprise database application for pulp and paper mills that contains over 400 tables and millions of data rows and sells for $2 million.
Peter Brawley is a database consultant with more than 20 years of experience building enterprise database applications using products such as MySQL, Clipper, Sybase, and Access. He is a well-recognized name from his multitude of articles on database technology at sites like DevX.
