Book Description

9 Feb 2012 1935520474 978-1935520474 First Edition
Come into the special ed classroom, where the kids who don't fit in anywhere else spend their day. For these kids-real kids Dennis J. Bernstein taught in the New York City public schools before he became an internationally known investigative journalist-pistols, switchblades, police cars and hunger are more instructive than textbooks. Special Ed is about daily life under the siege of poverty, racism, and class warfare. We come to know these kids intimately: Gloria, whose mother was disappeared in Guatemala and whose friendship with Marilyn rescues her from trauma-induced silence; Paulie, who "finds tears in the mirror's eyes" but thinks of himself as tough and defies the gang-guys who threaten to drop him from the roof of the projects; Regina, who sells nickel bags before class and gets high alone in the gym before giving a heart-wrenching performance of a poem by Langston Hughes. Dennis Bernstein loves these kids fiercely, and we come to love them too as the collection unfolds.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Powerful Book of Short Poems, Deep and Long in Meaning 28 Oct 2012

A Powerful Book of Short Poems, Deep and Long in Meaning

With this book of poems inspired by his Special Ed students, Charles Bernstein
not only uncovers the cruelty, but also the poetry in their lives, which can
find light in the darkest places: "The sun never comes to the residents /of the
old-age home, except as reflected through the eyes of my kids." Heroes And Saints
Often it is a student's own words that turns the literal into the figurative. To describe
the jacks he has thrown spinning on the floor, Jason says: "Look at the ballerinas/
dancing on their tiptoes" Pea-Brain....In brief, a powerful and exciting book of short
poems, deep and long in meaning.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful book! Highly recommended! 24 Feb 2012

I was so moved by this poignant book, that I read it in one sitting. I encourage everyone to glimpse a world that many know very little about.

Alice Walker loved the book too! She wrote, "Above all it is art turned to us through the eyes of love." Check out her full review above in the book description.
5.0 out of 5 stars An amazing collection 2 May 2012

This is a book of poetry. More so, however, is that it is a collection of stories by students in a special education classroom. These stories are transcribed as poetry; which on their own take you to another world. Some of the poems had me crying.
