5.0 out of 5 stars Criminally ignored album by top band 15 July 2005
Format:Audio CD|Amazon Verified Purchase
The singles from Special Beat Service(Save It For Later, Jeanette & I Confess)all narrowly missed the top 40. I can only put this down to lack of airplay/changing public tastes because the singles & Special Beat Service are brilliant.
Save It For Later is still my favourite Beat song - it's worth getting the album for this alone, but there's so much more. Sole Salvation deserved a single release while tracks like Sugar & Stress and End Of The Party hint at what might have been had Dave & Roger not jumped ship and split the band.
There are nods to the band's reggae influences as well which makes for a mix of styles which is as refreshing now as then.
If it's hits you want, get I just Can't Stop It, but for sheer quality this is THE Beat album.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Beat's Third Album 3 Sep 2003
By Jimbo VINE™ VOICE
Format:Audio CD
The Beat are a band deserving of accolade after accolade producing some of the most complex, gritty, serious music with as much humour as Madness but to me far greater talents were involved in Brum's finest's band.
Lots of people have 'dissed' this album as the worst of the three and admittedly, third albums are always difficult for bands - the choice between 'tried and tested' and 'new direction' is one of the oldest musical questions but Special Beat Service comes up trumps. The Beat decided to 'shift' their style albeit only slightly with this album but they managed to produce some of their best tunes e.g. 'Save It For Later' (with the 'fellator' double entendre good ol' Dave Wakeling!), 'I Confess' fantastic piano intro, 'Spar Wid Me' ('because we all know that Elvis died fat'! Classic!) etc etc etc.
Not one bad song and an album you can play again and again.
Buy It.

5.0 out of 5 stars Under-rated and Ignored but Brilliant 30 Oct 2007
Format:Audio CD
I remember seeing The Beat on OTT (the late night adult spin off from Tizwas)when this album came out. I had like them before this but I said to my friend at the time that this would either make them really big or it would be the end of them. Unfortunately the latter was the case.

This album had such a cool cover, borrowing from the old BEA airline livery. The songs were great, I loved Jeanette in particular but the whole album was just a great pop album.

Review Update:
This new 2 CD plus DVD version is just what the doctor ordered, brilliant, it even contains the legendary (in my book anyway) OTT performance on the DVD, however, this is where memory and reality clash. I remembered the OTT performance as a great live performance with loads of atmosphere but in reality it is the band mining to a backing track, guitars not plugged in , drum dampers clearly visible and a studio that looked like an ealy 80's Saturday morning TV show (OTT was an attempt to turn a Saturday morning kids show into a Saturday late evening young adults show). Despite this reality check and the DVD content, as is usual in these packages, being less than indispensible, I love the music and the 2 CD are brilliant!
