It is well made and looks like it can take quite a bit of abuse, the Post Hole Digger does exactly what it should do. However, you do need a Digging chisel to break up the ground first to make the best use of it.

Some things one buys, then has second thoughts later. But occasionally a product pops up and you decide to buy it, and it turns out to be fantastic. This is how I'd describe the Spear & Jackson post hole digger. It's nothing short of brilliant for doing what it's designed for. I had never had to put in a fence post before and was puzzling about how to go about it, but then I remembered watching some council workers with these kinds of digging "pincer" tools, so checked out what was available on Amazon.

Well, I dug mt first fence post hole in about 20 minutes! The secret is to take *small* bites of soil at every plunge of the tool. Some customers have complained that the tool has bent out of shape, but I think that's because they're being too eager, trying to take too much soil out in one go. Don't! Just little and often, and 20 minutes later *in soft ground* you'll have a 2ft hole perfect for your fence post (or indeed other posts, such as for washing lines, aerials etc).

In harder, stony ground it may take a bit longer. With my second hole I had to contend with some tree roots, but I do have other tools, too, so a few blows with the chisel end of a crowbar quickly split those roots.

Not too heavy, and easy to use, especially if you use the spear-throwing technigue as seen on YouTube. (No pun intended)

I bought this to dig the holes for 50 metres of post and rail fencing, plus posts for 3 field gates. A very easy tool to use, particularly considering the ground was heavy clay. At the price, quite amazing. Should have bought one years ago.

This tool really is the dogs nuts, made a hard very easy like a hot knife trough butter. It's blades are well made and have a very good thickness to them. This tools is fairly heavy but this only aids in the digging process, yes if your not used to doing this kind of work it will make your arms ache. Defiantly a good buy well deserved its five stars I have given it.

I have a post hole digger elsewhere so knew what to expect with this tool. This Spear & Jackson version is first class, well built and capable of all tasks I have so far thrown at it. Wood handles are sturdy and well varnished and I prefer them to the steel handled variety as they seem to absorb some of the shock as you thrust the digger into the earth.

Having in the past dug post holes using a spade, trowel, etc I asked myself why did I not buy one of these years ago! I Used it in conjunction with a 5ft iron bar with point one end and chisel the other and it was a stroll in the park!
If you need to dig holes BUY ONE. I bought this one rather than the fibre handle one because I thought it would be more rigid.

Great tool, not tried any others but for the price not sure you can beat this one. Does not have hand guards so did bang my hands together twice but that is basically muppetry on my part and would not think it was worth paying the extra for ones that hand them and certainly would not want metal handles over the wooden ones this has.
