One of my better decisions. Had to dig deep holes for 13 concrete post. In conjunction with Spear & Jackson Landscaping and Fencing Post Hole Digger and Faithfull DIGBAR72 Digging Bar 72 x 1 Inch 17 lb two of us had the fence up in 3 days. Saved about £500 over having a fencing contractor do it, had a load of serious excercise, acquired some lovely tools, and have the satisfaction of seeing my handy work on a daily basis. Very pleased. Spade is extremely robust and practically indistructible and has had serious use in heavy stoney soil.

Read the reviews for this item and brought it , that is as far as it goes. First day of using it no problems, however on the second day I found that the welding had split near the base of the handle and therefore did not have the same purchase as the first day, am now in throws of buying another one from somewhere else. I thought that Spear and Jackson were a good make and a safe bet, it would seem that I was wrong.

Although this was advertised as a drain digging spade, I needed this for digging holes for fence posts. Delivery took just 3 working days, the spade itself is of good quality steel and after using it to dig 6 fence holes each one about 22" deep. I have to say it was an essential purchase, the handle is sturdy and no noticeable give was found. I am certainly glad I brought this and recommend it for anyone who needs to dig a lot of holes for posts etc.

It is one of those tools that will only get to use every now and again, however when you need it you will be so thankful that you have it. And for less than £20 it was worth every penny.

Good value for the toughest gardening. the narrow blade concentrates your power on a small area ,great for cutting tree roots .
As it's all steel it is quite heavy to use, so not my first choice for digging light soils.
I had to dig 2 post holes for a new gate .My house is on the site of a church tower and the massive foundations are 9 ft wide. Even the " garden soil " is solid packed rubble with 20 K stones and 3 inch tree roots in it . I could not have managed without this spade and an electric drill / breaker .

Without doubt the most useful and satisfying tool I've bought for years. For once the goods live up to the maker's claims. Very heavy, immensely strong and well designed. I had to dig fence post holes 30" deep but not more than 9" round at the top. Did it brilliantly. Hit some areas of conglomerate stone a couple of inches thick and it hammered through these with ease. Worth every penny.

Digging holes for fencing or simply for planting in a garden of chalk and flint was hard going, but this spade makes light work of heavy soil. It came sharp though I've honed the edge a little and it cuts through sizeable roots with little effort. The top edge is rounded off but does take its toll on the soles of your boots, but this absolutely isn't a complaint.

Very well made and after giving it some rough treatment, it still looks like brand new and has saved me its purchase price time over in additional concrete I'd have needed to fill around posts with a regular spade.
