Book Description

Judgment of the Witch

The Carolinas, 1699: The citizens of Fount Royal believe a witch has cursed their town with inexplicable tragedies -- and they demand that beautiful widow Rachel Howarth be tried and executed for witchcraft. Presiding over the trial is traveling magistrate Issac Woodward, aided by his astute young clerk, Matthew Corbett. Believing in Rachel's innocence, Matthew will soon confront the true evil at work in Fount Royal....

Evil Unveiled

After hearing damning testimony, magistrate Woodward sentences the accused witch to death by burning. Desperate to exonerate the woman he has come to love, Matthew begins his own investigation among the townspeople. Piecing together the truth, he has no choice but to vanquish a force more malevolent than witchcraft in order to save his beloved Rachel -- and free Fount Royal from the menace claiming innocent lives.

5.0 out of 5 stars His best yet 14 Jan 2003
Format:Hardcover
Speaks the Nightbird is the finest novel this author has yet produced, and considering his other works, such as Boy's Life, Gone South, and the epic Swan Song, that's saying something. The novel concerns the coming age of a Magistrate's squire in a struggling colonial town, and a witchcraft trial which will forever change his life. The book richly evocates it's setting, and it's obvious McCammon has done a great deal of research into his subject matter. Although not an out and out horror novel, this has it's fair share of grisly moments, but bottom line it's an intensely involving and absorbing read with (unusually in this reader's experience) a richly rewarding climax. Not only that: but the book, despite being a fantastic stand alone work, manages to offer the tantalising prospect of a sequel. Robert McCammon is simply one of the finest authors working today. Read this, you will love it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Astonishing return by McCammon 25 Jan 2011
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
He has left us wanting for so long but Robert McCammon is back with Speaks the Nightbird, a quite stunning novel of witchcraft, bigotry, greed and life in late 17th Century USA.

Our hero Matthew Corbett is a young cleric and off to the Florida marshes with his Magistrate (surrogate father, teacher and friend) to preside over a witchcraft trial. In 1699, all witches are considered guilty despite any contrary evidence. The fact that this witch stirs the blood of the young cleric makes for some tortured soul-searching on Matthew's part.

The novel is constructed beautifully: the search for evidence, the threat of the Spanish; the indigenous natives; strong characterisation and the introduction of a new sleuth in our eponymous hero. All build superbly to a final sequence which leaves the reader very satisfied. A master story-teller at work and much welcomed back into the fold.

5.0 out of 5 stars speaks the nightbird 28 Dec 2002
Format:Hardcover
After nearly a ten year absence Robert McCammon has returned to our bookstores with an epic tale of dark secrets and page turning suspense. I read this book in three sittings such is this master of his genres skill at putting the reader slap bang in the middle of a story line that grips and drags you sweating to a page turning end. Robert McCammon is back and for his fans it was a long wait but with Speaks the Nightbird he yet again proves that all good things come to those that wait.

5.0 out of 5 stars Why Can't All Books............... 6 Aug 2006
Format:Mass Market Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
Well I thought Robert McCammon had been abducted by aliens but he's back, and how. Between the two volumes it runs to about 900 pages but it's such a rivetting read that it seemed much shorter. There's nothing other-worldly about the plot, it's a mystery that'll draw you in from page 1 - great characters, great story, just enough historical detail and a surprising, but welcome, epilogue. Get it today.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent 17th Century New World Whodunnit 29 Mar 2010
By Sir Furboy TOP 1000 REVIEWER
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
this doorstop of a book was originally published in two volumes, although I cannot imagine how the books could have been split to reach a satisfying conclusion to book 1.

This was an excellent plot driven narrative set in late 17th century Carolina (the year is 1699). Matthew Corbett is the clerk to a magistrate called to the settlement of Fount Royal to pass judgement of a young woman accused of witchcraft. But (as the Wizards fo Waverly Place would say) Everything is not as it seems. Indeed there is wonderfully tangled web of deceit, greed, revenge and murder which makes this a thoroughly intrguing and enjoyable book. McCammon writes good characters and tense seens with adaptability and skill. If Matthew Corbett is a little to able to see patterns that eluude other intelligent people, then that is no more so than in an Agatha Christie novel or somesuch.

5.0 out of 5 stars Bravo! 1 Dec 2012
Format:Paperback
I listened to the Amazon Audible version of this, narrated by Edoardo Ballerini. The audio version runs for over 30 hours and it was a superb use of 30 hours of my time! No wizz-bangs and literary tricks, no padding, no pretence, no arrogance. Just a well-written, careful, intelligent story which is part detective, part thriller, part love story. A lot was brought to tale by the narrator. His characterisations were spot on and he added much to what was already an entralling tale. This was good writing and good narration at it's best. Loved it!

5.0 out of 5 stars no horror but full of mystery 3 Aug 2012
By deanfan
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
Loved mccammon's earlier horror novels especially "wolf's hour" and was curious about this, having read no reviews. Thinking it was a historical horror(if there is such a genre) I purchased this. I proceeded to read this in a matter a days. I was totally engrossed in this historical novel. the detail of early american life brought to life with skill. the novel was compelling in its detail, humour and mystery. I would recommend this book and its follow up novels. ( I am on the fourth novel in the series)
