Book Description

20 Nov 1996 0333678508 978-0333678503
This is an exciting collection of writings by people who have experienced mental distress. It includes accounts of psychiatric treatment, psychotherapy and alternative treatments; life in mental institutions and moves into the community; self-help methods and work to improve mental health services. Moving, sometimes funny and often dramatic, the pieces are written by some of the key activists in the mental health survivors' movement, as well as by people best known as writers and poets and others who, for a period of time, have been caught up with mental distress and have something original to say.

Product Description

Review

'This is a profoundly moving collection of testimonies to the ability of the human spirit not only to endure and survive but to learn and teach from the depth of experience... This book could be a powerful force for change.' - Lisa Haywood, Vice-Chair of National Mind and user of the mental health system

'The overall effect of this book is to give a picture of the real world of real people that contrasts so vividly with what goes for knowledge within traditional psychiatry. Sign, symptoms, psychopathology and diagnosis, the bread-and-butter of psychiatry, all acquire new meanings in the light of the insights that emanate from the chapters in this book. I wish this book had been around at the time I was training to become a psychiatrist. It should be compulsory reading for all mental health professionals before they are let out into the world. And if this happens... who knows... we may even get a mental health service that is geared to dealing with people rather than illness.' - Suman Fernando, Consultant Psychiatrist

In his book, Jim Read presents a broad selection of first-hand accounts of many ditressing mental disorders. Autobiographical experiences, accompanied by experienced knowledge of psychiatry, help the reader to further understand the complexities of illnesses ranging from anxiety and depression to ADHD and anorexia nervosa. This is an indespensible manual for healthcare professionals and carers of those who suffer from mental afflictions. It is well laid-out and written in easily understandable - yet not patronising - language.

This book is an excellent insight into the world of service users and survivors of the mental health system. It allows the reader to appreciate the issues that they have to overcome and to have a better understanding of the difficulties and prejudices that they have to deal with. Hopefully the reader will get an overview of the changes that need to be made through government policies, and the NHS. Excellent read and good background reading for students.

5.0 out of 5 stars Speaking our minds: an anthology 30 April 2011
Format:Paperback
I started reading this book in a high street bookshop but the price was prohibitive. I found it at a much lower and affordable price on Amazon. The book is excellent for my studies as a psychiatric nurse, and gives honest and detailed accounts of mental health problems from the service user's perspective - too many books on psychiatry are written from the practitioner's viewpoint. So, an excellent book for any reader!
