Originally recorded in the late eighties when, as Steven Wilson points out, they had no ‘record deal, audience or idea where we were going’ Speak was originally put out by Wilson and Bowness themselves as a cassette-only release. They returned to the album in the late 90s, at which point they re-recorded some of the parts of the album, replacing those recorded on the most primitive of equipment, without losing the spirit or beauty of the original recordings. Mixtaped, a new 2 disc DVD, is released on Kscope on September 14th. Format:Audio CD
Fruit from the forest of dreams. The long-hidden tapes of early No-Man studio sessions finally get a full CD release, and reveal themselves as bewitchingly atmospheric: fragments of stories, brittle log-drum percussion, haunting slow-arching melodies, organic instrumentation blending seamlessly with gauzy electronic soundscapes, yearning tone-poems, and the hair rising blissfully on the back of your neck. Covers of Nick Drake ("Pink Moon") and Donovan ("River Song") anchor one side of "Speak" to visionary English folk, and you could use "Gone To Earth", "In A Silent Way" or "Spirit Of Eden" as landmarks, but this is off on its own. One of the most beautiful records ever released. In any genre.
