The layout of an elementary school workbook, a poor means of introducing kanji, katakana and hiragana. No introducing, or breaking down the sounds that are presented, just an approach that says "remember this string of foreign characters, and what they mean in Japanese and English...there's a reference in the back of the book"
No explanation to the kanji introduced.
It all adds up to a very poor book on the subject matter.
Some superscripted romanji and pictographic or explanatory representation would be very helpful. At least a better overall presentation would do the trick, as I've gotten other books that manage to be much more helpful in far less space.
The little puzzles and games are a waste of time and effort. I really would like to know who convinced the planet that words based on the subject matter being thrown into crossword puzzles and "connect-the-definition" type games are actually effective teaching aids for children or adults
As it stands, this book reads and educates like a workbook thrown together by a teacher-in-training.
I gave it 2 stars inseatd of one because if you torture yourself or just happen to find the book readable and useful, you'll learn something, albeit at a slower than necessary pace.
