Review

'If you haven't discovered Hiccup yet, you're missing out on one of the greatest inventions of modern children's literature.'

(Julia Eccleshare, Guardian children's editor 20030622)

'Irresistably funny, exciting and endearing'

(Amanda Craig, The Times 20030622)

HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON:

CHILDREN'S BOOK OF THE WEEK: 'This book is great fun and has a Blackadderish sense of humour ... full of the sort of jokes that will make schoolboys snigger.' (Nicolette Jones, The Sunday Times 20030622)

A super story, inventive, ingenious, perpetually surprising. One to cherish. (Armadillo, Spring 2003 20030622)

A wonderfully wittily written and illustrated story. (Waterstones Quarterly Magazine )

How to Train Your Dragon is a delightful narrative caper... It offers a challenging read to 11-year-olds, and rewards reading aloud, especially for those who relish an element of theatre at story time. (Lindsey Fraser, Sunday Herald, Glasgow )

... raucous and slapstick... liberally illustrated with [Cressida Cowell's] riotous drawings, notes and maps. (The Financial Times )

[Cressida Cowell] puts a contemporary spin on the old brains over brawn moral and brings the story to a climax with a thrilling dragon duel. Lots for lots of different readers to enjoy. (Books for Keeps )

Cowell brings Hiccup to life in this silly and delightful little novel. (St Paul Pioneer Press )

Bulging with good jokes, funny drawings and dramatic scenes, it is absolutely wonderful. (Independent on Sunday )

'hilarious'

'funny and well writen'

(Cheri Lloyd )

'another fiendishly funny catalogue of disaster'

(Pet O'Connell )

Product Description

Read the original books before you see the How to Train Your Dragon film!

THE STORY CONTINUES in the third volume of Hiccup's How to Train Your Dragon memoirs ...

Haddock III was an awesome sword-fighter, a dragon-whisperer and the greatest Viking Hero who ever lived. But it wasn't always like that. Hiccup's memoirs look back to when Hiccup was just an ordinary boy, and finding it very hard to be a Hero.

Climbing on to a Roman Dragon Rustling ship by mistake in your first 'Boarding an Enemy Ship' lesson is bad enough. But to then discover that Alvin the Treacherous is also on board proves to Hiccup he couldn't have been more wrong, especially when he steals his copy of How to Speak Dragonese. Can Hiccup save the dragons and the day?

How to Train Your Dragon is soon to be a DreamWorks film starring Gerrard Butler, America Ferrera and Jonah Hill, out in March 2010 adapted from the best selling How to Train Your Dragon series by Cressida Cowell.

Read the rest of Hiccup's exploits in the How to Train Your Dragon series in How to Train Your Dragon, How to Be a Pirate, How to Cheat a Dragon's Curse, How to Twist a Dragon's Tale, A Hero's Guide to Deadly Dragons, How to Ride a Dragon's Storm, and How to Break a Dragon's Heart.

My whole family are hopelessly in love with Hiccup the Useless and his Dragon Toothless. The Viking nerd is back, trying to learn how to handle a boat in the usual ghastly weather off Berk when they are captured by Romans. Hiccup and his best friend Fishlegs escpae, but poor Toothless is captured, and in order to rescue him the boys have to team up with the daughter of a neighbouring tribe, Kamikazi. The madly funny drawings and great dialogue lie over more thoughtful stuff about what makes a real hero. Absolutely perfect for age 6-13. We can't wait for the audio version, too, read by the new Dr. Who.

This is immense fun!

Hiccup reminded me of Artemis Fowl with his plans, his cunning and his fierce intelligence, but he's more positive than Eoin Colfer's flawed (though IMO also very enjoyable!) anithero.

Hiccup, along with his friends, gets into scrapes because he is not that talented at being a Viking - the problems start when he and his friend Fishlegs attempt rather foolhardily to board a peaceable fishermen's boat and pick the wrong vessel, and from then on disasters of hilarious proportions come thick and fast.

The book is full of the kind of jokes young boys find hilarious, but even this (rather older...) lass found much of it funny, sometimes side-splittingly so. Vivid characters and an endlessly inventive storyline had me hooked.

David Tennant must also be highly commended for bringing the characters to life with such immense verve and a highly entertaining range of voices and accents. Favourites of mine (though all of them were brilliant) included Stoick, who sounded something like Sean Connery's elderly granddad, Fishlegs, whose endless incapacity for piracy brought desperation to his every word, and Camikazi, heir to the Bog Burglers, who had me in stitches every time she appeared.

Overall, a wonderful book read with immense talent, enthusiasm and inventiveness by a talented storyteller, this is a must-own. A little too old for my nephew just yet, but it will be no hardship looking after the discs for him until he's old enough to claim them!
