Great comic series, 4 Jan 2004
This review is from: Spawn 1: Creation (Paperback)
Reading the other reviews, you'll get the consensus that Spawn really is an excellent comic series. The artwork is brilliant, the story captivating and the atmosphere really dark and gothic.
The reason I wrote this review was to say two things that other reviewers may disagree with, or have simply chosen not to mention.
1. Try to get these in order. I collected whichever ones I could as they appeared on the shelves of my local shop. Its really confusing when they mention previous episodes.
2. You must be very careful when handling these because they are quite fragile. They really aren't made too well at all. My copy of Escalation literally fell to pieces when I was reading it. I wonder if anybody else has noticed this.
But besides this, these really are the best comics out there. Anyone who has an interest in graphic novels or gothic stories shouldn't miss the chance to check these out.

A new hero is born, 19 Oct 2010
This review is from: Spawn 1: Creation (Paperback)
A breath of fresh air in the comic book world.
When I first read Spawn, I was so impressed. I have always been a comic fan and love Marvel, 2000ad and some DC characters. I was unfortunately getting a little bored with reading about the same super heroes and felt I needed something new.
That's when I saw Spawn. The art work just sucked me in. I loved the dark style and the gritty feel to Spawns world. The Characters are very well designed and have great personalities. In comparison to the other comics that were available when this first came out, the graphical style was light years ahead.
Its all well and good looking great, but if the story you are trying to get across is rubbish, the effort behind the art is a waste. Luckily Spawn does not fail in story telling. It excels.
The story follows Al Simmons an assasin for the goverment and his untimely demise. Being a man who walked on the dark side of life, he goes to hell. Simmons sells his soul to Malebolgia (the devil in essence) and returns to earth as spawn, a soldier in hells army. Throughout the story, Simmons has to come to terms with his new existance and the life that he left behind.
Spawn is one hell of a comic book story and is done with so much intellect and passion. This graphic novel covering the creation of a new comic book legend. is a must have.
If you are a comic book fan and haven't yet read Spawn. Make this right and buy this book.

Brilliant artwork, 23 April 2008
This review is from: Spawn 1: Creation (Paperback)
I must admit I got hooked on SPAWN from the incredible figures, and hearing about the great stories; so I got hold of the entire first six volumes. The artwork is truly magnificent; but the story keeps repeating itself. I'm in the middle of it all, and hope it'll get deeper, darker and more complicated as it goes on (as with Gaiman's stories).
