Product Description

Review

"This comprehensive and highly readable book collects together all that vital underpinning knowledge that you ought to have at your fingertips... with very little in the way of maths or circuit diagrams to challenge those of us who aren't academic by nature... Technical explanations are lucid and informative and there's some good practical advice too. Would I recommend it to readers of Line-Up? Certainly. Not only will it help you deal with earnest enquirers about Dolby 5.1, but it will also consolidate your understanding of some of the fundamental aspects of our trade. If you're recording or mixing stereo or multichannel sound it could even help you do your job better." Malcolm Nelson, Line-Up magazine

Product Description

This book explores the principles and practical considerations of spatial sound recording and reproduction. Particular emphasis is given to the increasing importance of multichannel surround sound and 3D audio, including binaural approaches, without ignoring conventional stereo. The enhancement of spatial quality is arguably the only remaining hurdle to be overcome in pursuit of high quality sound reproduction. The rise of increasingly sophisticated spatial sound systems presents an enormous challenge to audio engineers, many of whom are confused by the possibilities and unfamiliar with standards, formats, track allocations, monitoring configurations and recording techniques. The author provides a comprehensive study of the current state of the art in spatial audio, concentrating on the most widely used approaches and configurations. Anyone wishing to expand their understanding of these cutting-edge technologies will want to own this book. It helps keep up to date with the latest technology - 3D audio, surround sound and multichannel recording techniques, and enables you to cut through the common confusions and problems associated with the subject. It furthers your knowledge with this comprehensive study of the very latest spatial audio technologies and techniques.

I would recommend Spatial Audio to anyone looking to further their knowledge of multichannel recording and mixing techniques. The sections on microphone technique and psychoacoustics are particularly good and more thorough than in a lot of similar books. I wouldn't recommend this book to beginners as the author does assume that the reader already has a reasonable understanding of common sound recording practice. Having said that though, it does contain clear descriptions and is up to date in its coverage of topics such as DVD audio and SACD. Overall I found this book to be interesting to read and not too heavy on formulas and equations. Recommended.
