On purchasing this book for my grandson I decided to read it first to check its suitability. I need not have worried. The story of the developing relationship between a lonely young boy, desperate to be as good a footballer as his peers, and the old, wheel-chair bound man who, after winning his trust becomes his mentor, is a joy to read.
The book is beautifully written and the characterisation so believable that when a near tragedy occured I was moved to tears. Thankfully, and without giving too much away, there is a happy ending when the old man's secret is revealed which will surprise and delight readers of all ages.
And yes - my grandson loved it too!
