Biography

Sparks - short biog

The artists who would come to be known for posterity as Sparks commenced inventing their often-copied, seldom-equaled brand of music back around 1970, when pop was young and brash and the Southern California airwaves awash with a contingent of post-British invasion inspirations like The Kinks, Barretts Floyd, and The Seeds. The purchase of countless shiny-sleeved ... Read more in Amazon's Sparks Store

This folks is where the Sparks odessy began and it is not a bad place to start! Originally released under the band name Halfnelson, the Maels (one of two sets of brothers in the band at this time) were clearly the dominant force. However, there are some concessions to shared ownership as a few of the song writing credits do go to the other members.
There is all the quirkyness we have long since come to expect (esp. Biology 2, Roger) - great tunes (I just love Slowboat), the humour, the falsettos and on this album, some crazily simple arrangements - the sparse ones are the best for me.
Much of the originality comes from the excellent (clean) production of Todd Rundgren as he limbered up for his own classic Something / Anything. And it is he who contributes what is for me the album's outstanding feature - the stereo seperation and the gimmicky swaying of instrumentation from left to right (check out the guitar solo on No More Mr Nice Guys) and in and out (surely) on the silky smooth Fletcher Honorama. This album ranks in their top 5 for me so Sparks fans can buy with confidence.

4.0 out of 5 stars Saccharin Wonders 13 Feb 2006
By Nick H
Format:Audio CD
A bit of a mixed bag this one but typical Sparks !!! The first of two USA imports (Woofer being the other) The first single "Wonder Girl" is pure pop-song as are "Roger" and "Slowboat". Each song is open to interpretation-"Fa La" (she ain't heavy she's a brother to me),"High C"(since you left the Opera) "Fletcher Honorama"(go easy with him, this is his final whim), "Biology 2" (do the Homozygous?). There is a dig at Alice Cooper"No More Mr Nice Guys", "Saccharin and the War" is a brilliant expression of revenge but my favourite is "Big Bands" (-broke spent I still marshall all my strength when big bands play). All quite different a refreshing change with no soppy love songs and typically Sparks-if you enjoy daft songs then this is for you-not as good as their latest offering "Hello Young Lovers" but then that was 18 albums later !!

5.0 out of 5 stars A GREAT DEBUT FROM THE BROTHERS. 1 Sep 2008
By JUDE
Format:Audio CD|Amazon Verified Purchase
My introduction to Sparks came, like most people, via Top of the Pops in 1974, where they blew me away with their hit, `This Town A`int Big Enough For The Both Of Us`, a pop song unlike any I had ever heard before-or since for that matter. I obtained it and the album it came from, `Kimono My House` and I was not disappointed. From then on, as a card carrying member of their fan club, I bought their singles and albums. I only heard THIS album a few years ago and I wasn`t expecting it to be as good as Kimono. How wrong I was, this is one of the best albums ever made. It has lots of great songs and features two sets of brothers, the Mael`s and the Markey`s. What more could anyone wish for in a group? If you have never bought this, do yourself a favour and buy it NOW.
