Danish Edition, PAL/Region 2 DVD: Subtitles: Danish, Finnish, Norwegian, Swedish. Academy Award nominees Stockard Channing and Bob Hoskins co-headline the British romantic comedy Sparkle, the third outing by the critically-praised writing and directing team of Neil Hunter and Tom Hunsinger (Lawless Heart, Boyfriends). Neophyte Shaun Evans plays Sam Sparks, a young man who migrates from Liverpool to London proper with his single mother, Jill (Lesley Manville) - a chanteuse in local pubs. In need of a job, Sam makes the cut at a public relations boutique by sleeping with the sixty-something head of the agency, Sheila (Channing), then (in a Graduate-like twist) falls for a girl closer to his own age, Kate (Amanda Ryan) - only to discover with horror that she's Sheila's daughter. As the expected complications ensue, Vince (Hoskins), the sexagenarian who arranged Sam and Jill's apartment in London, nurtures a deep-seated passion for Jill and decides to make his feelings fully known to her. I confess I only came across this film because I saw Shaun Evans in Ashes to Ashes, thought he was a bit of alright and checked his filmography on imdb. I then decided to check this out and didn't have any expectations but I loved it. It's a soapy sub-Graduate melodrama that is never going to claim to be exciting or re-write what films are all about. But it is a heart-warming, sweet film with engaging characters and a nice story. In a nutshell, Sam is a young Scouse chancer who comes to London looking to make his way in the world, bringing his free-spirited mum with him. Their lives and loves become entwined with a set of characters who are all loosely connected to each other.

This film was made in conjunction with the UK Film Council which is facing the axe from the Government's cuts, and it is a prime example of why it shouldn't be cut. Films like this rely on funding form the UKFC and young, unknown writers and actors will be denied the chance to make films without it. We don't all want to watch Hollywood blockbusters that have cost £100,000,000 to make. Some of us want to watch something normal that we can relate to that has cost a couple of million.

Off my soapbox. Sparkle is a great Sunday afternoon movie that could be watched by all the family (providing the kids are older teens as there's some swearing and mild sex scenes) and I'd be happy to watch it again.

This is a really enjoyable film - a good yarn! Also a great cast. There's a shocking twist in the tale and I was hooked wondering how it was all going to work out in the end.

Wonderful film----warm,romantic and funny----Shaun is a gem of an actor, natural, understated with vulnerability aching under the surface.
But beware UK buyers--of the outrageous rip off prices being charged by cowboys on Amazon uk----can be resolved by (US)Amazon com.-----you can get it for £2----yes you have to pay the postage---but you won't be shafted

This was delightful and if I feel down this is the one I turn to - Shaun Evans and Amanda Ryan are charming.

I am very disappointed to find that there is no provision of sub-titles on this DVD. I watched the film recently on TV using the subtitles and had assumed that the DVD would also have them. I think there should be information given before purchase takes place so a decision whether to buy or not can be made in full knowledge that f the facts.

Enjoyable, Lesley Manville is great, as is Stockard Channing. Not a romcom, nor is it 'hilarious' it's a watchable film with a great cast.

Disappointing, the film was too slow. The story different to the normal Rom Com, but it wasn't particularly funny, I nearly switched it off a couple of times. However it had a happy ever after...
