How will the thorny, passionate love triangle between Waverly, Seth and Kieran resolve itself?

5.0 out of 5 stars Good intentions 26 Dec 2012
By Paul Tapner TOP 500 REVIEWER VINE VOICE
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
Second volume in the 'sky chasers' trilogy, a series of science fiction novels for young adult readers. All about teenagers on a starship headed for a new world to colonise it, who run into problems when another ship attacks them. Ideal age would be thirteen and up, thanks to adult themes and some violent moments. It's good enough though to be enjoyed by older readers as well.

This follows on from the first volume GLOW (Sky Chasers). And there's not enough exposition to really bring new readers up to speed, so you are better off starting with Glow.

Those who have read Glow, read on.

Spark is three hundred and seventy five pages long. It's divided into four parts and each part is further divided into shorter chapters.

[Mild spoilers follow so don't read on if you haven't read Glow]:

This follows on from the end of Glow, with Kieran now Captain of the Empyrean. Seth in the brig following his attempted mutiny. And a great wedge having been driven into Kieran's relationship with Waverly.

When a saboteur strikes, can he and Seth put aside their differences and save the ship? Can the whole crew pull together? And what will they do about the threat still presented by the New Horizon, and the hostages that ship holds?

All the crew are having to grow up very quickly. As some very tough choices have to be made...

Waverly, Kieran and Seth are all viewpoint characters, and the narrative does jump back and forth between them. The burden of command and the desire to get their parents back forces all three characters to make hard decisions. All of which have an effect on their relationship.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sharp, engaging sci-fi dystopia 21 May 2014
By Elle L
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
The Sky Chasers trilogy (Glow, Spark, Flame) is an amazing sci-fi suspense story as good as Across the Universe, Divergent and Legend. The concept is fascinating and the protagonists well fleshed out, with great twists and turns in their character arches.
It kept me glued to the pages from book 1 to book 3 with no respite. Fans of good storytelling in the sci-fi genre (though not the typical sci-fi written by men authors with emphasis on battles and machinery) will absolutely love this trilogy.

4.0 out of 5 stars Captivating enough to read the third! 22 Oct 2013
By DaisyDaisy VINE VOICE
Format:Paperback|Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
I read the first in this series, Glow, a while back and decided to read it again before starting on Spark. I started it Saturday morning and finished it Sunday morning. I was then very excited to start on Spark. However, this one then took me a week to get through. Not that it was necessarily bad, it just wasn't as fast paced and thriling as the first.

That said there are many excellent elements that make up the story, which is why I gave it 4 stars. I was intrigued by the changing relationships between Waverley, Kieron and Seth and how the other children on the ship interact with each other. I thoroughly enjoyed the ethical and moral dilemmas that both ships face.

I am hoping that this has set up for an explosive finale in the final installment and that the resolution is satisfying.

3.0 out of 5 stars Solid YA SF sequel 24 Jun 2013
By I Read, Therefore I Blog VINE VOICE
Format:Paperback|Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
It's several weeks after GLOW. The Empyrean can't close the gap on the New Horizon and Kieran's dictatorial leadership is splitting the children, making him paranoid that Waverly will lead a coup against him. Waverly however has problems of her own as many of the young girls blame her for leaving their parents behind and she's haunted by what happened to her on the New Horizon.

When Seth's mysteriously released from the brig, it corresponds with an attack on the Empyrean. Seth realises that there's a saboteur on board who's intent on making him the scapegoat for their crimes but to prove his innocence, he needs Waverly's help and to get it, he must win her trust and that's difficult with Kieran intent on using the attacks for his own ends ...

The second in Amy Kathleen Ryan's YA SF trilogy is a solid sequel that builds on the psychological effects of the events from GLOW. However, I remain disappointed by the portrayal of religion, the backstory remains undeveloped and the cliff hanger ending is both abrupt and unsatisfying. Nevertheless, I will read the conclusion because there's an interesting set-up that seems to tie together the over-arching plot strands.

Both Kieran and Waverly have been deeply affected by what happened to them in GLOW and it's interesting to see how the ramifications play out. I particularly liked the way the younger girls blame Waverly for leaving their parents and the graffiti and whispering campaign rung true (although I would have liked to see her confront it more). Kieran's descent into paranoia forms a nice contrast to the way Seth is increasingly confronting his own actions and taking responsibility for them. Although the inevitable YA love triangle is skewered there are at least solid characters within it.
