This book reminds me a little of a Spanish version of Raymond Mortimer's English Grammar in Use and Advanced Grammar in Use, which I used extensively when I worked as an EFL teacher. It combines good notes on usage and formation with clear examples and solid exercises and moves from beginner/intermediate level in Part I to advanced level in Part II. As an intermediate student of Spanish, I used this book to help me brush up on such language points as uses of haber, usage of the preterite vs the imperfect and formation of the subjunctive and found it terrifically useful. I have to take issue with the previous review by Midnight Cowboy - my edition has answers to the exercises in both Parts I and II - those to Part I are on page 289. This edition was published in 2006. Maybe he/she has a different one?

This book explains more clearly some of the most difficult-to-learn aspects of the Spanish language.

The key is that the authors explain in English and often make useful comparisons between the Spanish and English languages which always help.

I have been using this book all the way through level 1 and level 2 of Spanish and still refer to it frequently.

The book is split into two sections - the first half of the book takes you through everything you need to know about Spanish grammar (useful for levels 1 & 2), and the second half revisits the same points with much more of an advanced emphasis on fine-tuning (useful for levels 3+).

So, whether you're just setting out to learn Spanish or if you are in your 2nd or 3rd year I would highly recommend this book.

Brilliant book for those wishing to really learn Spanish the right way - by learning Grammar. I've been trying to learn for years, but this book is really helping me finally learn!! I would recommend this book, for sure. They have a few exercises at the end of every section (with answers!) which really helps to remember what you've learned. Highly recommended as a side programme to your main learning study programme.
